Re: This is crazy, $255 dollars for a common II+ RFI ...

as explained in other mails too nowadays it makes more sense to buy an entire II+clone and desolder the keys and reusing them as spareparts and putting the chips to the antistaticfoam then as spareparts too - its at least at the end rather cheaper than hunting for NOS keys....

Just be careful if you do buy a clone "keyboard". They typically have custom encoders and if the encoder is bad you only have a set of spare keyswitches and not a keyboard.

Re: Apple II Apple II plus keyboard needed

Most clones are pretty blatant copies of the Apple II+ since most of the parts in the Apple II are off the shelf stuff, their keyboards should plugin with an Apple II to Apple I keyboard adapter. If you don't have one of those they are easy to make.

The issue I have found with clone keyboards is while they may actually have better quality switches they almost always have custom microcontroller encoders and ROMs on the keyboard pcb and not an apple compatible daughterboard. If the encoder is bad you really have two choices, scrounge the keyboard for switches to fix another keyboard or rewire each switch in the keyboard to work with an apple encoder. You will also need to get an daugherboard encoder or something like Vince Briel's super encoder. In fact until I get enough working Datanetics key switches at a reasonable price (I'll pay the 10 bucks a switch the guy wants on eBay but he won't guarantee they work) I will be taking a clone keyboard and re-wiring each individual switch in a matrix to match the Apple II encoder for my second Mimeo. Luckily for me the keyswitches are each snapped into a metal frame and don't need the pcb behind it for support or my job would be much harder.

Good luck,
Corey

Re: Apple II Apple II plus keyboard needed

taking a close look to the photograph below, shows that what is called daughterboard is integrated in this keyboard at the right side..... so there are 2 possibilities:
1. the keyboard works... and you just take the signals from the 16-pin plug like from any apple ][ keyboard....
2. the keyboard has a problem... in that case you might decide to instaed of taking the signals from the 16-pin plug after the decoder instead take the signals directly from the wirelines of the keys before the decoder.... and just open the connections to the decoder itself... up to my opinion the decoderchip and the few DIL-Logic-chips seem to be exact copy from apple II keyboard logic ....
and just with the transportcost this will be surely the cheapest alternative at the moment and the floppy can be kicked off at ebay again.... probably at a price that brings back part of the cost for the transportation....

Re: Apple II Apple II plus keyboard needed

Up to my close view to the Photos and my understanding of the text ( and i am now german citizen ) this keyboard works exactly like a german APPLE II Keyboard - in other words: it delivers to the 16-pin DIL plug exactly the same signals ( decoded Keycodes ) as the original Apple II Keyboard with the original decoder. The additional chips at the right side match exactly the same used in the daughterboard of the original keyboard.... the only difference is that the "daughterboard" has been "integrated" to the free space at the right side of the keyboard-PCB itself and the decoder is replaced by a similar standard chip with no exotic extra programming"....

hello toolkitman,
take a look at the new thread "what do you think wiil drive..." the link in the first posting ....
two junkyard IIe´s but both surely will sell for bargain and allthough the keyboards are messed up...
at least the most keyswitches should work as sparepart !
