FM Tuner in a Power Mac 5500 Information

Hi everyone, does anyone here have experience with the
with the Power mac 5500 and TV tuner / FM tuner? I just got
my TV tuner card off of Ebay for my 5500 and I know how to use the TV part,
but I did some research and found out that FM tuning might be functional as well?
The questions I have are:

  • Did apple make both a TV Tuner card and an FM/ TV card
  • If there is a difference is there an easy way to tell
  • What program do i use to play the FM radio

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
James

IIRC, there was FM Tuner software, similar to the AppleCD Player. Probably have to dig around on a MacOS install CD for it.

1) Apple made a TV-only tuner card, and Apple made an FM/TV tuner card.
2) They are different. The TV-only card has a single coaxial cable connector on it. The FM/TV tuner card has two coaxial cable connectors (one for a TV antenna/cable connection, one for an FM antenna).

I'm thinking that it was just part of the Apple TV software--that there was a tab for FM radio--but I could be mistaken. Anyway here's the place to find out:
http://www.zone6400.com/
If you can't find it anywhere on that site, then ask the question in their forum. Pretty amazing people still hang out there. That was a popular line of Macs. I have mostly fond memories of my old 6400's and 6500's. Maxed 128mb DRAM, Sonnet L2 G3 upgrade, 3dFX video card, 7200rpm ATA hard drive, a firewire/usb card, OS 9, and times were good.

You are writing of the TV Tuner Card (820-0577-C in the PAL version)? I have a couple thereof, which function nicely enough at the various frame-sizes possible. I had not seen a combined TV/FM card, so I have listened to FM using La Cie FM Radio. Power out and sound in are through the ADB port, for which the tuner has a built in splitter-cable to share the ADB port with the keyboard–mouse. It has only a flexible-wire antenna, but comes also with inbuilt earphone and mic. input ports.

The advantage is that the tuner can be used with any Mac that has ADB and at least modest Fi, if not Hi, rather than needing special facilty in the MLB for its attachment. The latest driver (as of 2005), allowing preset tunings and other fandangles, is still available from La Cie.
