Anonymous, I don't suppose you could....

Hi Anonymous,
I don't suppose you could bundle all your Apple 1 WAV files together in one place for downloading?
I started to download the files you posted on the MESS forum, but a lot of the links have now expired.

Anyway, thanks for your efforts in documenting the MESS + Apple 1 process, and for converting these programs to WAV files.

Cheers
Phil

Hi nama_chari Smile

Sure no problem. I only have about 36 Apple-1 wave files so far. I plan on making more in the future. I only ask you credit me if you host these waves somewhere else (with the exception of Corey's version Lunar Lander). http://www.mediafire.com/?9ll60r301q5i4r7

Anyway, thanks for your efforts in documenting the MESS + Apple 1 process, and for converting these programs to WAV files.

You're welcome and thank you for your ULTIMATE APPLE1 CFFA 2.7.po

Btw I've included two basic wave files in case one doesn't work. If you have any problems just let me know.

P.S. I go by Anon (real original I know).

Thanks Anon,
I won't be posting them anywhere. I don't want to take any credit for your hard work.

I have an old Powerbook that I have decided to use as a dedicated MESS/MAME machine and have built a OS X PPC version of both. I basically wanted to emulate all the systems that I actually own, and I thought MESS may be the best 'one stop' solution for this. Now that I have all the virtual systems up an running I need to compile some software that MESS can use, so I was wanting to try out your WAV files.

Thanks for your time an efforts.

You're very welcome Phil! Smile

Congrats on getting MESS to work. I know it can be a pain in the ass to get up and running. I'm just a little surprised you are going to emulate systems you already own. I think it would be a lot more fun to play with the real thing.

Anyway I hope my files work for you. Maybe one of these days you can teach me how you made those .bin files for your APPLE1 CFFA.po? Wink

Best Regards,

Re: Anonymous, I don't suppose you could....

Some things are just easier to do in emulation. Take for example the 'Ultimate Apple 1' Image file. I used Open Emulator to build this as I could easily copy and paste from text files directly into the emulator and build the archive of programs relatively quickly. Thats basically the reason why I like to have all my real systems emulated incase I need to do something like this.

As for Apple 1 in MESS, I do seem to be having a little bit of difficulty getting BASIC to load. Reading your readme file I believe you have experienced this problem before.

Thanks again

I have 4 versions of BASIC in audio format. 2 that came with your WAV files. One WAV file I had downloaded, and one AIFF file that was also downloaded from the net. All 3 WAV files failed to work. I converted the AIFF file to WAV and this one worked. Do you know what it is about MESS that causes this issue?

Hi Phil

Sorry my BASIC waves didn't work for you. Well at least you have one that works now. I am interested in knowing if my other Apple-1 software/games works for you?

Personally I have not had any problems loading BASIC. I honestly don't know why others would. Even the "experts" at MESS.org are completely stumped by this issue. They can't figure out why my BASIC.wav works for me, and it won't work for them. This is why MESS has two BASIC wave files as part of their "official" software list.

I can only speculate what might be causing this problem. I'll give you some of my theories. It really could be anything though.

1. The different hardware, as well as the different operating systems people use to run MESS could be playing a factor.

2. The BASIC wave itself could be corrupt, or have an improper Bit Rate, Audio sample rate,
Audio format etc.

3. Possibly it's a user related problem. People might be trying to "rush" through the loading steps, thus not allowing the emulator to "keep up". When I hit "Play" on the virtual cassette I usually try to give it about 3-5 seconds before I exit back to the monitor. That leaves enough time for the MESS emulator to process the needed information from the wave file.

4. The MESS emulator could have a bug.

5. A bad MESS build.

Would you mind sending me that BASIC wave you converted from AIFF? I would like to study it.

Anon

So far I have tested the WAV files of codebreaker, LunerLander (ascii version) and Stopwatch...all seem to work fine.
I have posted the version of BASIC that works for me in MESS on my iDisk site here:

https://public.me.com/lord_philip

Look under the Apple 1 folder.

Thanks again

Thanks Phil, and you're welcome.

I forgot to mention one thing. Sometime you might want to check out QMC2. It's a front-end GUI for MAME and MESS. I guess it's going to be the new "official" GUI. http://qmc2.arcadehits.net/wordpress/

You can read more here: http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/qmc2/index.php?title=The_%27ultimate%27_guide_to_QMC2

Yep...thats what I'm using as it's the only decent front end available for Mac.

Phil

This is a bit off topic to the thread but have you ever ran the games "LITTLETOWER" and "MICROCHESS1 (aka: ASMmchess)"? These are games from your ULTIMATE APPLE1 CFFA 2.7.po. I'm able to run them just fine but for the life of me I don't understand how to play them and there doesn't appear to be any manuals or documentation anywhere on the internet. I'm just curious if you have any knowledge concerning these programs? Any helpful tips or advice is appreciated.

Please note: I'm not asking you to "fix" anything.

Anon

P.S. If anyone else knows anything about these Apple-1 games you're more than welcome to respond.

Unfortunately I don't really know either of those programs. Microchess has always baffle me, but I believe there are instructions (maybe for the Kim-1 version) somewhere on the net.
Sorry I can't help you.
