Apple-1 vs Replica-1 Video Differences

So I was a little bored this morning and decided I wanted to learn how to use iMovie. So I grabbed my iPhone and did this little video....

YouTube Link... Apple-1 vs Replica-1

Re: Apple-1 vs Replica-1 Video Differences

Thanks, I appreciate you making the video.

Some things I observed about the Apple-1 from your video:

  • On startup, the screen is full of underscores, blinking at signs, and a few random lines of spaces.
  • Due to "crosstalk", the screen has visible dots at each character.
  • It looks like it can only display:
    • symbol characters: space !"#$%&'()*+,-./0123456789:;<=>?
    • upper case characters: @ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ[\]^_
    • return which does a newline (carriage return and linefeed) and can scroll the screen.

  • The cursor is a blinking at sign.

I noticed that, after powering on, you had to RESET the Replica-1. Does the Apple-1 also require a RESET after powering it on?

Re: Apple-1 vs Replica-1 Video Differences

I just noticed, the image stabilize messes with the zoom so it can be a little confusing about the reset/clear on the Apple-1.

I have reposted the video at Youtube

UPDATED VIDEO LINK....

Yep when you power on the Apple-1 you get a bunch of "garbage" in the video. In fact if you power down, but don't wait long enough before turning it back on the screen is filled with some very interesting garbage. It's one of the things I kind of like about the Apple-1/Mimeo setup vs the Replica-1. You get this really vintage system feel having to push clear screen.

Yes just like the Replica-1, you do have to reset the processor. Just on an Apple-1 you have to press clear screen first. Apparently I missed that iMovie messed with the zoom and cut that part out. I have fixed it in the new link.

Mike Willegal has a nice writeup on his website about the cross talk issue, every character position regardless of a character being there or not has a "dot" like a grid on it. I have an old security monitor that can "regenerate" the signal and not show the dots, but its hooked up to my Apple II plus and doesn't really match my "plexi-case" Smile

I plan on doing more videos of other Apple-1 stuff once I get better at this iPhone camera thing. If I don't get better at holding it strait, I'll drag out one of my Nikon SLRs that can do video and a tripod but then this becomes as my wife would say a "big production".

Cheers,
Corey
