Introducing the Open Apple podcast

February 7, 2011 — Mike Maginnis and Ken Gagne, two long-time Apple II users, are proud to announce the Apple II community's first co-hosted podcast. Open Apple, a monthly show dedicated to Steve Wozniak's most famous personal computer, begins broadcasting today at http://www.open-apple.net/ with a new episode to come every month.

"When we got home from KansasFest 2010, we didn't want the experience to end," said Gagne in the show's first episode, referring to the annual Apple II convention. Added Maginnis, "One of the great things about the Apple II is the community that surrounds it. Having a podcast where we can chat with other Apple II users fosters that community feeling you get at events like KansasFest." In keeping with that theme, the two co-hosts are joined in their first episode by KansasFest veteran Andy Molloy, the first of many guests to appear on Open Apple.

The Apple II was the first personal computer produced by Apple Computer Inc. after its founding in 1977. More than eight models and five million units were sold before it was discontinued in 1993. Nearly two decades later, the computer still enjoys regular releases of new hardware and software, thanks to the dedication and enthusiasm of both loyal fans and retrocomputing newcomers.

The Open Apple show aims to spotlight that vibrancy and serve that community with regular segments that include "II News", a roundup of the latest Apple II activities and announcements; "Retroviews", a look back at classic hardware and software; "Apple Pickings", which spotlights Apple II sales on eBay and Craigslist; and "Name the Game", an audio trivia challenge in which listeners can win prizes.

"There are plenty of other great retrocomputing podcasts that we enjoy listening to," said Maginnis, "but none dedicated to the Apple II is produced on a regular basis, and nothing that consistently features multiple voices from the community. With this show, Ken and I are looking forward to keeping in touch with each other and other Apple II geeks every month."

Mike Maginnis writes about Apple's pre-Mac computers on his blog, 6502lane.net. Ken Gagne is editor and publisher of Juiced.GS, the Apple II's longest-running print publication, and is marketing director for the community's annual convention, KansasFest.

The Open Apple podcast is available immediately at http://www.open-apple.net/ where it can be streamed live or downloaded.

Ken,

lol Ken, you beat me to it.

I was at A2Central yesterday and read the news. I went straight to the new site and listened to the podcast. It was OUTSTANDING! The entire site is nice.

Re: Introducing the Open Apple podcast

Thank you, Steven and Jim! And sorry for the delayed response; I must've forgotten to enable whatever email notification this forum offers.

We've made some nice tweaks to both our site and our recording process in time for the second episode, featuring guest Ivan Drucker, a former Apple employee and current staff writer for Juiced.GS:

We're still hammering out the bugs and hope to finally "get it right" by our third show next month. Smile

Thanks again,

-Ken

Open Apple #5

The June 2011 episode of Open Apple, the Apple II community's only co-hosted podcast, is now available.

This month, Mike and I are joined by Brian Wiser, an unsung hero of the Apple II archivist movement, as well as a director and producer of projects related to Joss Whedon's Firefly television show and Serenity movie. I report on my trip to the Vintage Computer Festival East 7.0, Mike notes the changing of the guard at Syndicomm, and Brian brags about the Apple employees he's met and the museums he's visited, after which Mike and Brian chat about their favorite Apple II publications. We all lusted after the Ultima trilogy on eBay but were dismayed by two other auctions that were not what they seemed. Classics that need to be remade, those that are being remade, and those that were and failed are our gaming topics of the month.

Open Apple #6

The July 2011 episode of Open Apple, the Apple II community's only co-hosted podcast, is now available.

This month in Open Apple, Mike and I share the studio for a one-on-one recording session. We look at user groups, museums, and academic classes that celebrate the Apple II, as well as the growing collection of the Internet Archive, courtesy Jason Scott. While looking forward to next week's KansasFest convention, memories of previous KFests are unearthed and examined. Unusual Apple II and Apple III machines are hot on eBay, as are the competitors in recent and upcoming arcade tournaments. And let's not overlook the gauntlet that Richard Garriott has thrown down over the future of the Ultima franchise.

The August 2011 episode of Open Apple, the Apple II community's only co-hosted podcast, is now available.

This month, Mike and I keep the KansasFest vibe going with first-time attendee David Schmenk, getting his perspective on the greatest products, sessions, and experiences of last month's Apple II convention, from the CFFA3000 to Sweet16 and more.  Ewen Wannop's publication of an online magazine archive leads to a brief discussion on the creation and consumption of PDF scans, after which we get Tony Diaz on the line to clarify a hardware matter.  On eBay, we like pins, buttons, and games, before getting ready for a special guest at this month's Denver Apple Pi user group meeting.

Re: Open Apple #7

Just one quick question. Why can't I access the May, June and July podcasts on the website any longer? Also when I tried downloading all the episodes in iTunes I'm missing the June and July episodes. Why? Just curious.

Re: Introducing the Open Apple podcast

Magnus,

Sorry for the late reply, but as you've probably found, the "missing" episodes were restored a day or two after your message. An update to our podcasting plugin temporarily broke the link between our blog posts and their associated MP3 files.

Open Apple #8

The October 2011 episode of Open Apple, the Apple II community's only co-hosted podcast, is now available.

This month, Mike and I talk with Kelvin Sherlock, prolific Apple II programmer of GShisen, Silver Platter, ProFUSE, and more. I build the suspense before revealing the identity of KansasFest 2012's keynote speaker before we look at the latest Kickstarter fundraising projects that appeal to Apple II users. We ask ourselves, "Why are Apple II users different?" when sharing knowledge, products, and magazines. On eBay, we're looking at soundtracks, CP/M cards, compression software, and defunct user group newsletters, before engaging in a smackdown of BASIC programming languages. Finally, we enjoy classic Apple II games on iOS and challenge Kelvin to explain why we can't port Portal to the 6502.

The November 2011 episode of Open Apple, the only co-hosted Apple II podcast, is now available!

This month, Mike and I talk with Melissa Barron, the Apple II community's famed tapestry artist. We three relate their experiences exploring the past and future of computer media at conventions and museums in Chicago and Rochester, exploring the methods used to create and preserve history. Further tributes are made to Steve Jobs, while Mike Westerfield reclassifies old BASIC tools and releases new ones. Lord British's Texas mansion is up for sale -- a fitting home for Vintage Computer Festival Southwest? We debate various models of floppy drives and are wary of fake and expensive Apple II computers on eBay but excited about new e-books and iOS apps of interest to retrocomputing enthusiasts.

Open Apple #10

The December 2011 episode of Open Apple, the only co-hosted Apple II podcast, is now available!

This month on the Open Apple podcast, Mike and I are joined by Rob Kenyon, a two-time KansasFest attendee as well as a professional programmer and 30-year veteran of the Apple II. We talk about how great it is to be a part of the international community of Apple II users, even if none of us can afford to buy Apple's founding contract in a Sotheby's auction. Rob asks, did Steve Jobs purposely kill HyperCard to turn the Mac into a more closed environment? We congratulate Wade Clarke and Andrew Schultz on their showing in the 17th annual Interactive Fiction Competition. Plenty of original Apple II computers are selling on eBay, with Mike and Rob discussing how to distinguish an authentic classic from a modified one. We share our wishes for the holiday season, including for an affordable accelerator card and a CFFA3000, before signing off for the calendar year.

The January 2012 episode of Open Apple, the only co-hosted Apple II podcast, is now available!

This month, Mike and I chat with David Greelish, co-host of the Retro Computing Roundtable podcast and recently published author of the book The Complete Historically Brewed. The highlight this month is David discussing with noted Apple II historian Steve Weyhrich the role of former CEO John Sculley at Apple Computer Inc. and in the fate of the Apple II — a topic about which David recently interviewed Sculley himself!

The March 2012 episode of Open Apple, the only co-hosted Apple II podcast, is now available!

This month, Mike and I chat with Andrew Roughan, Australian Apple II user and curator of the Marinetti Open Source Project. From Jordan Mechner at PAX East 2012 to John Romero at KansasFest 2012 to Nolan Bushnell at GameFest, we're all about attending conventions and chasing luminaries. We squabble over how to pronounce "Karateka", look forward to new Monkey Island and Wasteland games, and eagerly consume iBooks for Apple II users on our iPads. On eBay, we get a previously untold tale of an extravagant Australian lot, then take a small jump north to look at an Apple II J-plus, before marveling at how astounded major press outlets were over your typical Bell & Howell.

The April 2012 episode of Open Apple, the Apple II community’s only co-hosted podcast, is now available!

This month, our hosts chat with world video game record holder and Apple II game critic Brian Picchi, whose YouTube channel showcases the best and worst of Apple II entertainment. It’s a good time to be a convention-goer: registration has opened for KansasFest 2012, the lineup for Vintage Computer Festival East 8.0 has been announced, 8 Bit Weapon played at the Smithsonian’s opening of the Art of Video Games, and Jordan Mechner is keynoting PAX East. Kickstarter continues to be popular for reviving classic franchises, Ewen Wannop updates SNAP and SAFE on a shoestring budget, and Jordan Mechner unearths his Prince of Persia source code. On eBay, we found a rarer-than-the-Apple-1 copy of Akalabeth on cassette, a rare Apple IIGS-specific wristwatch, and a potential CFFA3000 scalper. Finally, we look at some gadgets that are new to us, including old iPads, new iPads, and DSLR cameras.

The May episode of Open Apple, the Apple II community’s only co-hosted podcast, is now available!

This month, Mike and Ken chat with David Finnigan, proprietor of the Mac GUI Web site and author of the upcoming book, The New Apple II User's Guide. Our eyes are caught by another new book release, The Best of Creative Computing: Volume 3, as well as the upcoming biopic based on Steve Jobs, in which actors have been cast to play Apple's two co-founders. Prince of Persia is still big news, with the source code for Jordan Mechner's classic Apple II game having been salvaged, released, and modified, while classic games like Leisure Suit Larry, Dungeon Master, and even Repton are enjoying literal and spiritual remakes. On eBay, we crack open the case to examine broken Apple III boards and prototype Apple IIGS boards.

The June episode of Open Apple, the Apple II community’s only co-hosted podcast, is now available!

This month, Mike and I speak with Martin Haye, 8-bit programmer extraordinare. We love us some conventions, be they KansasFest, the Vintage Computer Festival, @party, ROFLCon, or WordCamp. We wonder why video games have abandoned humor and if Kickstarter can bring it back. Steve Wozniak is advising the Steve Jobs film -- no, not the one in which Ashton Kutcher will play Steve Jobs, but that raises the question: who will play the hosts of Open Apple? On eBay, we're suspicious of an Apple IIe that was supposedly once Jobs', and we wish there were a more comprehensive online resource for Apple II clones.

Re: Introducing the Open Apple podcast

Hey Ken,

Just finished listening to the latest podcast, another excellent program.
Just so you know, if you go to the "This is laughable" thread, I put the e-mails and responses from the seller of the "Steve Jobs IIe" up so folks could see them.
The more questions I asked, the more flustered he became.

The July episode of Open Apple, the Apple II community’s only co-hosted podcast, is now available!

This month, Mike and I speak with Rich Dreher, developer of the CompactFlash For Apple (CFFA) card. The first batch of CFFA3000 cards sold out in 2011, and the second batch is now shipping with similar sales numbers. Rich takes us behind the scenes of the product's success before dishing on other II hardware developers Vince Briel and Mike Willegal. We look at the astronomical numbers rare Apple-1 computers are fetching on eBay and at Sotheby's and celebrate HyperCard turning 25 while Atari turns 40, though Mike objects to the latter. David Finnigan's new book is out, and Robert Tripp is hot on his heels when an updated and digitized version of the classic What's Where in the Apple — and we have the exclusive interview with Bob! All this content and all these guests make for our longest episode ever, perfect for listening to while you drive to next week's KansasFest.

The September episode of Open Apple, the Apple II community’s only co-hosted podcast, is now available!

This month, Mike and I chat with David Schmidt, the programmer responsible for ADTPro. Beyond his own program, David has also contributed to the development of Davex, GSport, AppleCommander, CiderPress, OpenEmulator, DiscFerret, CFFA3000 — and much, much more. Collectively, the show's hosts marvel at the deluge of Apple II games that are being ported to iOS, Apple's mobile operating system … though we question the direction Jordan Mechner is taking the classic Karateka. Apple-1 computers continue to fetch exorbitant prices at live auctions, while iPads and IMSAIs fail to sell on eBay — though the latter may soon get a Kickstarter from Vince Briel. Finally, I quietly brood while Mike and David enthusiastically sing the praises of their favorite computer, the Apple III.

This month on Open Apple, Mike and Ken chat with Ewen Wannop, British programmer of 16-bit telecommunications programs such as Spectrum, SAM, SNAP, and SAFE. The hosts share feedback galore from the last episode and contemplate how to record a live show. After catching up on some headlines from last month, we plow forward, celebrating the return of an interactive fiction publication and grumbling that even beginner IF can be as obscure as the medium is infamous for. The September 2012 issue of Juiced.GS just shipped, and with it, a look at what features a hypothetical System 7.0 operating system would include. Is it reasonable to consider that a software upgrade warrants a hardware bump, and what the next model of Apple II would look like? Photos of Steve Jobs in his natural habitat show an Apple stronghold as Spartan as ever, but you can decorate yours with Melissa Barron's screenprints from Etsy. There's a Disk II floppy drive on eBay that holds within it a working Mac mini — a cool hack, but is it worth a cool grand? We question the value of purchasing free software on eBay and marvel at everything from lighters to thumb drives in the shape of an Apple II.

The November episode of Open Apple, the Apple II community’s only co-hosted podcast, is now available!

This month, Mike chats with Apple IIGS programmer and guest co-host Geoff Weiss about his work on the Spectrum Internet Suite and debuts some new Classic Desk Accessories for the IIGS, based on his KansasFest 2012 presentation. Mike and Geoff go over some recent Apple II news, such as Brutal Deluxe's latest software offering, a missing time capsule, a visit to the Russian Apple Museum in Moscow, and Woz's Ask Me Anything on Slashdot, as well as Apple II-related movie and TV items.

The December episode of Open Apple, the Apple II community’s only co-hosted podcast, is now available!

This month, Mike and I chat with Kevin Savetz, Internet publisher and author of the memoir Terrible Nerd. We cross enemy lines to look at a book about the cultural, scientific, and philosophical implications of Commodore 64 programming, some of it applicable to the Apple II. Paul Terrell’s Polaroid snapshots of the first Apple-1 computers are cool, just like our reception to Jordan Mechner’s new Karateka game. On eBay, we discover the Androbot is not just another neat product from a Nolan Bushnell company, but another reason we prefer the Apple II to other platforms. And Ken’s accidental purchase of some Microzines produces the concept for a new and very expensive podcast!

The January episode of Open Apple, the Apple II community’s only co-hosted podcast, is now available!

Having gathered the treasures of 2012 and being tempted by the promises of 2013, the hosts of Open Apple are joined by Andy Molloy of Juiced.GS, Peter Neubauer of KansasFest, Vince Briel of Briel Computers, and Antoine Vignau of Brutal Deluxe to reflect on all that has happened with the Apple II and its community in the past year. We pick our favorite products, share memorable events, and make predictions for 2013. Topics include Apple-1 auctions, Kickstarter-funded sequels, progress in emulation, and more.

Open Apple #24

The February 2013 episode of Open Apple, the Apple II community’s only co-hosted podcast, is now available!

This month on Open Apple, Mike and I chat with Jimmy Maher, the historian behind the renowned blog The Digital Antiquarian. A published author, Jimmy provides us with his perspective on the pros and cons of going with a publishing house over the recent trend in retrocomputing toward self-publishing. We gripe about the Steve Jobs film sacrificing historical accuracy for mass appeal and recommend some alternative movies that get it right. We're still loving iOS as a platform for classic gaming ports, from the adventure game Transylvania to the recently released Lode Runner Classic. Speaking of platforms, which is better: the Apple II or the Commodore 64? The answer may not be as obvious as you think! Finally, we offer a cautionary tale to vintage computer collectors whose inventory may be at the mercy of an avaricious landlord.

The March 2013 episode of Open Apple, the Apple II community’s only co-hosted podcast, is now available!

This month on Open Apple, Mike and Ken chat with Egan Ford, aka the datajerk, the Apple-1 and II programmer extraordinaire responsible for the Apple II Game Server Online! Egan expertly demonstrates which CPU is faster, the 6502 or 8088, running circles around everyone listening. Laurie Spiegel is an Apple II user you may not have heard of, but extraterrestrials have, thanks to her contributions to Voyager's Golden Record; we have some of her music for you to listen to. Courtesy Facebook and scanners, we save Don Worth's magazines from the trash and Softalk from extinction, but we can't save derelict hardware from abandoned buildings. Will Steve Wozniak be as good a commencement speaker as the late Steve Jobs? Having heard Woz at KansasFest, we weigh in.

Show #26

The April 2013 episode of Open Apple, the Apple II community’s only co-hosted podcast, is now available!

This month on Open Apple, Mike and Ken chat with Earl Evans, Retrobits podcast host and Commodore 64 enthusiast — but we don't hold that against him. Registration for KansasFest 2013 is open, and we all want to go, but Earl has another destination in mind. Tech history is being unearthed before our eyes, with schematics for operating systems and circuit boards appearing in museums (where the price is right) and art galleries (where it's not). Brutal Deluxe is on a tear, releasing retroprogramming utilities for Windows and commercial games for the Apple II; we're big fans! But not all news is happy news: the Steve Jobs film has been delayed, and LucasArts has closed its doors — will we ever get another Maniac Mansion game for the Apple II? Maybe not, but Richard Garriott's successful Kickstarter gave fans a chance to pick up an original copy of Akalabeth. Better late than never!

The May 2013 episode of Open Apple, the Apple II community’s only co-hosted podcast, is now available!

This month on Open Apple, Mike and Ken chat with Daniel Kruszyna, aka krüe, famed demo programmer. We chat about @party, the upcoming fourth annual demoparty to be held in recently beleaguered Boston, and how even non-programmers will find plenty to like. The first of three movies based on the life of Steve Jobs is now available for free online streaming — what's the popular verdict on iSteve? There's still more CFFAs coming from Rich Dreher, and they'll work on even an original Apple-1, of which Mike Willegal is making yet more replicas. Speaking of clones, we found a "Redstone" Apple IIe clone in Australia that looks like a PC XT and is certainly no Tiger Learning Computer.

Re: Open Apple #27

A clarification - Rich has two different versions of the CFFA, the CFFA-1 for Apple 1 (and clones) and the CFFA-3000 for Apple IIs. They are not interchangeable.

Re: Open Apple #27

Thanks, Mike. We used "CFFA" as a blanket term for the family of peripherals, by which I meant to include the CFFA3000 and the CFFA-1. We're aware of the distinction and apologize for any confusion we caused.

The June 2013 episode of Open Apple, the Apple II community's only co-hosted podcast, is now available!

This month on Open Apple, Mike and Ken chat with Lon Seidman, sysop of the Matrix Returns BBS and co-host of Behind the Video. The dial-up bulletin board is making a comeback, thanks to Warp Six and the Raspberry Pi! It's so easy, anyone can do it — unlike buying an Apple-1, the going rate for which has skyrocketed to $668,000 USD. But even that is a pittance compared to what Steve Wozniak's former house is selling for. How long before he sells his current house and moves to Australia? Jordan Mechner's Karateka reboot has paved the way for Karateka Classic on iOS, just the way we remember it. Charles Mangin also blends new and old with his USB interfaces for the Apple II — get yours next month at KansasFest! Finally, if you want a GET LAMP coin or any of Jason Scott's documentaries shipped overseas, you're outta luck — but he has four new films coming, with a colleague's pinball film en route as well.

Open Apple #29

The July 2013 episode of Open Apple, the Apple II community's only co-hosted podcast, is now available!

This month on Open Apple, Mike and Ken chat with Mike Willegal, Apple-1 and Apple II reproduction expert extraordinaire. His topic is hot this month: five Apple-1 computers were simultaneously on display at the History San Jose museum; one is being auctioned online; Willegal was interviewed for a Kickstarter-funded book about the Apple-1; and his clones are appearing in a feature-length film about Steve Jobs — what a guy! He even went to Vintage Computer Festival Southeast this spring, though he’ll be absent from VCF Southwest, KansasFest, and Oz KFest, all occurring this summer. Mike, Mike, and Ken watch the trailer for the Jobs movie and find we all have different reasons to see (or skip) Ashton Kutcher in the title role. They may or may not have dressed up to see the recent Star Trek and Man of Steel films; maybe they’ll fit the part by wearing some Apple t-shirts from 1986 to see Jobs.

Open Apple #31

The October 2013 episode of Open Apple, the Apple II community's only monthly podcast, is now available!

This month on Open Apple, Mike and Ken chat with Brendan Robert of the Java Apple Computer Emulator (JACE) and Apple Game Server. Innovative cross-platform tools are being used to bring Lawless Legends, an original 8-bit RPG, to the Apple II and Commodore 64; as part of the programming team, Brendan takes us behind the scenes. He lives in a lawless land himself — the Old West of Texas, where gaming icons Ion Storm, Zynga, Lord British, Rooster Teeth reside. But when it comes to games, sometimes you can't do better than Tetris, of which there are many new and devious deviations. We get rid of old toys, like a SCSI CD-ROM 7-disc changer and a LANceGS card, so we can all have room for new toys, like A2CLOUD, Apple2Pi, BenchmarkeD, AppleIIWorks Envoy, and Final Cut Pro X. And sadly, Wayne Green of InCider and Byte has passed away; we remember his magazines fondly.

Open Apple #32

This month on Open Apple, the Apple II community’s only monthly podcast, Mike and Ken chat with Bill Martens of Call-A.P.P.L.E. Preserving our community’s software and documentation is important not just to the users, but to the people doing the preserving; Bill explains why. The show looks at how the media can never get enough of Steve Jobs, examining his early career and denoting his boyhood home as a historical landmark — but Woz gets his time in the spotlight too, on panels about Atari, the Jobs movie, or a Homebrew Computer Club reunion. Highlighted eBay auctions include the ten rarest and most expensive games and yet another Apple-1. Finally, Brian Wiser calls in to discuss The WOZPAK Special Edition, a book that made its debut at KansasFest 2013 alongside its creator, Steve Wozniak.

The December 2013 episode of Open Apple, the Apple II community's only monthly podcast, is now available!

This month on Open Apple, Mike and Ken chat with Andrew Schultz — gamer, FAQ author, and Interactive Fiction Competition participant. Text adventures are enjoying a resurgence in popularity and access, and Andrew guides us through the tools and resources available for aspiring game authors. Both Steve Weyhrich's history book and the Steve Jobs movie are available for home delivery, but there's only one we want to find under our Christmas tree. Jason Scott has integrated the JSMESS emulator into the Internet Archive, granting users unprecedented access to historical software right in their browsers. Finally, Ken, in his quest to be more Woz-like, adopts his hero's fashion style.

At the dawn of 2014, Open Apple, the Apple II community's only monthly podcast, engages in its annual tradition of reflecting on all that has transpired in the Apple II community in the past year. Ken Gagne moderates a panel of Mike Maginnis, Andy Molloy, Ivan Drucker, and David Schmenk to look at topics in news, emulation, hardware, software, conventions, and publications. Popular themes include the Raspberry Pi, the S-Prize, social media, JSMESS, the Jobs film, and KansasFest 2013.

The February 2014 episode of Open Apple, the Apple II community's only monthly podcast, is now available!

This month, Mike and Ken chat with Sean Fahey, proprietor of A2Central.com and KansasFest committee member. Sean and James Littlejohn distribute a plethora of Apple II hardware and software to KansasFest attendees, and next year's haul will be bigger than ever — we have the details why. Glenn Jones is working on a new Uthernet card, and we can't wait to see what new software it makes possible. The Mac turned thirty years old last month, and we reminisce about the first time we added a non-Apple II Apple to our inventory. Madden NFL, the football game that got its start on the Apple II, is the subject of both preservation and litigation — but we'd rather be playing Silvern Castle.

The March 2014 episode of Open Apple, the Apple II community's only monthly podcast, is now available!

This month, Mike and Ken chat with Evan Koblentz, producer of Vintage Computer Festival East. VCF East 9.1 is happening this spring, and Evan has an inside look at the event's founding, growth, and lineup. Margot Comstock has been announced as the keynote speaker of KansasFest 2014, prompting us to reflect on the history of Softalk magazine. The Apple2pi card is now shipping, and it reminds us of other small devices that left a big impression, like the Replica-1 and even the Apple Newton PDA — which still has an active user group! Finally, Steve Jobs is appearing in all kinds of icons, from e-waste portraits to unlickable postage stamps. When will Woz get the recognition he deserves?
