What happened to the original one? Did someone mess with it? Those things are built like a tank and should only need cleaning and lubrication to be put back in operating order.

Thank. I tried everything you had in your blog except the worm gear. I bet that is the culprit. Excellent write up. I am going to try that today.

Re: WTB: Apple 400k internal drive

Mike,

Two things.

1. Thank you so much. It was the worm gear. It had alot of "spak" (technical term Smile ) on it. I cleaned it off and that appears to have done the trick. I cleaned this drive from stem to stern, but would have never found the worm gear so thanks again.

2. You are quite correct that these are build like tanks. I actually dropped the drive while mounting it back in the case on a concrete floor. (Not recommended) and picked it up, unbent the one metal tab on the disk eject mechanism and low and behold it still worked.

Here is a picture of the completely cleaned 128K Mac booting a 400K version or MacPaint.

Thanks,
Jay

Re: WTB: Apple 400k internal drive

Mike was so right.

I purchased a completely busted 400K on ebay hoping that there may be parts in it to fix my drive in the 128K before reading Mike's page.

After having success with the Internal drive I figured, this weekend I would tear the external drive apart and clean it and so I did.

I actually got it working too. Now that I know what to look for in these things, they are pretty easy to fix unless there is an electronics issue with them. The mexhanical things are tedious, but doable if you are careful and take your time.

Thanks again Mike. I went from have no 400K drives working to having and internal and external drive working.
