Is it a II, or a II Plus?

This item just came up for auction on eBay...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/131012239692?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649#ht_657wt_1159

My question is this:

It has an 8030 Motherboard, looks to be a Rev 7.
Could it be a II Plus with a II Lid?

It appears to be an original.

Hello Steven,

it seems he´s not got the content of the question.....
yea that language from W.Shakespeare and James Joyce is realy difficult to understand......
even Kerouac had his difficulties....

but back to the question....
i´m not that sure, because i´m not that expert to the topic... but to me it seems rather more to be
a II+ with the wrong lid....
at least it´s not delivered with integer but instead with Applesoft....
and as another evidence - i´m missing some printing above of the CPU...
and finally the serial sticker at the groundplate... as far as i understood,
that kind of stickers were used with the II+....

there are some experts here, that can make better judgement to the issue than me....

Steven :)

It's a really late model Apple II. That's when they switched to the red sticker right before they ceased production of the II. This one was made in the cross over time when they were making both apple II's and II+'s at the same time.

The motherboard may or may not be original. Theirs no way to tell unless you had the date codes (all of them).

Speedy and All,

It looks to me, with the 8030 Motherboard Serial Number that this is a II Plus in a II Body.
According to the number on the MB it is a Rev-7.
But that Board Serial Number kind of clinches the deal for me.

Am I wrong? Smile

What makes a machine an Apple II or a II Plus? The only difference is in the ROMs. Nit-pickier folks will debate over motherboard revisions, date codes, RAM blocks and the color and brand of the slots. At the end of the day, it's the installed ROMs that decide the matter.

The exciting part of this hobby is finding survivors with low serial numbers. Those are the collectables. This machine is nice, but it's from the middle period of the II/II Plus production, just before the Apple's started selling like crazy in the green tag era. It's easily worth a few hundred bucks, but not thousands, IMO.

This definitely is/was an Apple ][ , one of the last before its Integer Roms were replaced, by its owner, with Applesoft Roms
The Model No. A2S0048 and Serial No. A2S1-67058 are that of an Apple ][
If it were an Apple ][ Plus the Model No. would be A2S1048 and the Serial No. would begin with A2S2-

Re: Is it a II, or a II Plus?

This brings us up in fact to start guessing...
is it an very early II+ with last old sticker and wrong serial i.e. wrong old case....
or
is it a very last of the II´s with wrong ROMs, that have been replaced / upgraded with Applesoft
and maybe the correct ROM´s still in the shelf....

the very last final clue can only be made with the bill....

in fact i tend to the second conclusion ... it makes more sense just upgrading the ROMs instead of
change of the rest ( sticker / groundplate / lid )

at least we may state that this one is exactly made while the switch of models might have been performed...
it could be a new motherboard just placed in one of the last old cases.... but that would require some
more pictures ( like the keyboard and PSU - and it´s datecodes )

but again it confirms, that sometimes decisions can´t be locked to one symptom....
final conclusion would be dependent to missing documentation / bill....

Re: Is it a II, or a II Plus?

I'm not sure what is original on this one. I have a rev 4, with a serial number in the 60k range, I'll look later and update the post with the exact #, but it is all correct and has a longer silver supply than the normal one (has an improved grounding system than the earlier supplies) and has a datanetics keyboard which from the angle of the pics this one lacks since the power indicator is completely flat. Later Datanetics like mine sit slightly above the keyboard, when Apple forced the spin off of the keyboard company from datanetics to handle apple's orders the new keyboards have power indicators that are flush. Also My rev 4 does have the red sticker and was built in early 1980.

So for this the question is the power supply, keyboard and motherboard. Someone with a rev 7, the last of the basic II series should chime in and say what their motherboard looks like, and power supply and if their keyboard is datanetics. Also we need to know their serial number to see if this machine should be a rev 4 or 7.

Cheers,
Corey

Re: Is it a II, or a II Plus?

You can tell this is beyond a doubt a later version Apple ][
Which, at some point in time, had "hobbled together" Applesoft/Autostart ROMs installed in it.
If you noticed the production date code on the D0 ROM (341-0011-00) is 8238
The Apple ][ was sold by Apple up into 1981 and was cheaper in price than the Apple ][ Plus
The only other real difference between the Apple ][ and the Apple ][ Plus are the ROMs

I have a slightly later II.
Model # A2S0016. Serial # A2S1-75607.
Motherboard dated 8046, a rev 7

Wayne,

Does it still have its Integer Basic and Monitor ROMs installed in it?

Re: Is it a II, or a II Plus?

No, it came with Applesoft. I wouldn't think that many Apple IIs in regular use wouldn't have been upgraded.
It was a freebee from someone that was moving. They'd gotten my name from the AppleBC website. I went by in the middle of their move and after that had no way of contacting them. I didn't get anything with it, just the II. Inside was a language card and a Disk II card.
