Another SE30 wth strange screen and exploded battery

Hi all and this is my first post here

I recently picked up an SE30 with strange pattern on screen – see images attached – also no start up bong

Took it apart and found battery exploded . removed old battery and also it has rotted out one end of the battery socket terminals – and only now seems to be soldered at one end as well so I removed the socket to clean under

I removed and cleaned rom/ram terminals and washed the board and removed the corrosion

Put it all back together to try it (with no battery socket and battery) and same pattern as above and still no start up bong

Then with ram and rom back in - I did not connect Hardrive or floppy cables and still get same pattern as above

Also then took out board and pulled all RAM/ROM out and put board back in to see what happen – still get the same pattern as picture above

All of which probably say its something on the board

Will it boot without the battery, could this be issue or am I looking at something more serious than this ie video issues etc

Re: Another SE30 wth strange screen and exploded battery

Most macs will boot fine without a battery; I don't think this is the issue here. My first plan of attack would be to reseat and clean every removable thing on the logic board. Then, I'd check the traces near the old corrosion site for continuity; if any don't make contact, jump them with a wire soldered in. Also, I'd check that surface mounted capacitor (all of them for that matter). If these leak, it'll look like little puddles of oil on the board. Clean up the residue, change the caps, and you're one step closer to reviving your mac.
I can say 99 percent that this is a logic board issue (no video problems, this screen usually means some sort of RAM/ROM error or a bad trace on the logic board).
Feel free to PM me with any further questions.

Re: Another SE30 wth strange screen and exploded battery

hi

thanks for the advice, I least I know its not the lack of battery then - have now remade the battery socket but wont put it back on just yet until I get it working

The board is now sparkling clean as are rom/ram

still same pattern - I will check for bad traces on logic board and I am also trying to find another ROM SIMM to try as this was covered in battery explosion too. is there any way to test a ROM SIMM outside of the board?

and will recap the board but have to say they all looked quite good but appreciate its better to do them

now off to get the multimeter/continuity tester out

Re: Another SE30 wth strange screen and exploded battery

I've done some more research into your problem. The checkerboard problem is normally due to connection troubles between the ROMs and their sockets, or the RAMs are configured wrong.
If you have different sizes of memory installed, the larger ones must be installed in bank A, and the smaller in bank B (bank A being closer to the edge of the board). All of the RAM sticks in one bank must be the same size, and each bank must have all four slots filled.
If the RAM's fine, then one or both of your ROMs may not be making full contact with the sockets. Make sure there are no bent pins, etc. You should also clean inside the sockets, if possible.
Hope this helps!

Re: Another SE30 wth strange screen and exploded battery

Thanks

I now have the cleanest rom and ram simms ever
but alas still same pattern

I am beginning to wonder if when battery exploded there is still stuff left under the ROM socket on the board (see the dirty board pic) - there appears to be traces running under here but removing this socket to clean under is not something I really want to undertake lightly

I am trying to source another SE30 from a friend so I can try my ROM and RAM Simms in that and then also his logic board in mine as his SE30 works fine

that will at least confirm ROM RAM simms are working as they should

appreciate the help

fri0701,

Do you think it could be the Analog Board?

Re: Another SE30 wth strange screen and exploded battery

I am bit happy to infrom the news, because the day before yesterday, I encountered the exsactly same strange pattern on screen.
(I prepered the photos of macs but I couldn't foind the way attach the pics.)

I got SE/30 at auction that machine was start without sound and nodisk. Opened and found leakages form power supply caps.
and logic board caps legs corroded. I changed all capacitors of power supply and logic board.
Assemble and start and see the strange pattern.

Clean up ROM and RAM, recoldered caps, then start with the strange pattern with sound....
Remove bank B ramRAMS, same, no good. Exchange bank A RAMS with 256k RAMS was OK.
The pattern come from bad 1MB RAM set.

I found the exchanged Lithium battery was HOT without power supply. After water washing the logic board, it was cool.Be carefull.!

Re: Another SE30 wth strange screen and exploded battery

Hi gsmcten,
I don't think the analog board is the problem here. In my experience, when analog boards go bad, the issues are more power/voltage related. This mac seems to function fine in those aspects, but the checkerboard screen is typical of logic board issues (plus the exploded battery checkerboard is very common, especially in SEs).

Mine looked almost exactly the same when I forgot to re-install the ROMs

Re: Another SE30 wth strange screen and exploded battery

Years ago, I had a screen like this appear on an SE FDHD. There was also a burning smell. The culprit? I had plugged an Apple 5.25" drive into the external floppy port. It had a 5.25" icon over the port after all. Easy mistake to make before I had the internet. Live and learn. Computer still worked though.
