Apple Studio Display CRT 17" VGA

Hello,

I have a problem on my Apple Studio Display CRT 17", a resistance had burned and I don't know the value.

Photo of the emplacement (circled in red) on the PCB:

Many thanks for your help, matacao.

You've circled what looks like a small capacitor, but there's too much glare and not enough of the component visible to really tell what it is.

If you're going to attempt replacement anyway, best to desolder it and post a better photo of the component. Can you read anything on the side of the part, or the identical one just to its left in the photo?

Usual safety warnings apply, high voltage stored in the monitor can hurt you, etc.

This is not a capacitor but a resistor, I can't read anything because the resistor had burned. On the previous picture I have desoldering it. If you want I can take a photo of the resistor.

What he said! :mac:

If that's a Graphite 17, I've got one handy that hasn't been powered up for a really long time. If the component's markings are burned off or otherwise illegible and I can peer in to see it without disassembling the case, that's easily done. Let me know where to look with a wider shot of the board.

As a last resort I can pull mine apart to get the info, I'm fairly certain I've got the Service Source for it and it doesn't look like all that big a deal.

Many Thanks for the reply,

My studio display is a blueberry (this is the same as the graphite).

I also have the Service Source Manual but I don't see any good photo of the PCB.

Tomorrow, I will take better photo and I will give you the exact location.

To see the resistor you need a little disassembly.

De nada,

Dissassembly may need to wait until I'm off on WED/THU. But I've always been curious, so I may poke around in there before that.

Hi,

Photos of the screen and the PCB. The resistor location is R555.

Okay, now I get it.
What I thought were small mounted cans on the board in your first photo was an illusion created by the holes in the PCB and the scorch marks.

I've hunted around and can't find any schematics for the Studio Display. Hopefully someone else will crack theirs open and get a good look at the R555 part.

Re: Apple Studio Display CRT 17" VGA

I hadn't realized Apple made a Graphite edition of your monitor. I should have described mine as Clear/Graphite as it is the 17" Studio Display CRT (ADC) edition.

However, and very conveniently I might add, I just so happen to have a Blueberry 17 on hand that I'd gutted after its flyback flew away. Surprisingly, I managed to remember where I stored that board. There doesn't appear to be any other resistor of that value for reference by component designation on the silk screen layer. Your pictures jogged my memory, the Blueberry 17 Shell (future iMacMaxi hack) is directly behind me, while the ADC is within my peripheral (so to speak) vision to the left side as I type this. Duh-oh!

How do I go about posting an image of R555 here on the new (to me/relatively speaking) forums software?

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

I have sent to you a PM with my email address, please may send me the image of R555 directly to my email.

I will post later the photo on the forum.

Sincerely, Guillaume (matacao).

It would appear that I can't access my iFrog account without signing in from the ludicrous, evil time sink that is facebook.

One day I'll learn how to get uploaded images to display here, meanwhile I've messaged them for a real login link.

Hello,

A big thank you for the photo. Thanks to you, I can now repair my studio display.

The color of resistance ring is red / black / red or orange / black / orange ?

De nada! Wink

My eyes are very tired, but it looks like Red-Black-Red-Gold to me.

If you're up over there, it's definitely time for me to get some sleep over here!
