Question for those in the know.. I was under the impression A2+ serials *were* fairly consistent. I had been under the understanding that the 2+ started out more or less at A2S2-0001 kind of and went up from there. Along the way, the serial number labels changed from the smallet darker green to the lighter green with the dot matrix style numbers. My 2+ has the latter with a serial in the 500,000s.
Yet here I am presented with an A2+ that has the old style sticker, but a seven digit serial.. 1400000ish. Does this suggest a2+ serials were not consecutive? This 2+ also has the older silver power supply. Wondering if its a misprint.
Using my imagination:
It's a fine day in the Apple II Plus assembly facility, maybe the year is 1981 or maybe it's 1982. Anyway, things are going fine until someone notices that the machine that stamps and applies the serial number stickers has run out of blank stickers!
No problem, thinks Mr. Maintenance Man. I'll just go to the supply closet and load in a fresh stack of blank stickers. He walks over to the closet and goes over to the familiar shelf.
But there's another problem. No more stickers! They must have used up the last batch before another shipment came in from the sticker supplier.
Frantically, he scrounges around, looking for anything. He asks a coworker. "No problem. In the mean time, just use these old-style serial number stickers. We've still got a box left around from before we switched over to the new style."
Finally, the problem is solved. He loads in a set of the old-style stickers in to the serial number machine, and this suffices until a new shipment of the usual stickers arrives.
I kind of thought that too.. except for the presence of the older silver style power supply and older datanetics keyboard. I cant find it now, but I seem to recall an a2 info site somewhere that mentioned production numbers for the 2+ and I thought the final number was still under a million. Hmm. Gotta find that again.
When you say "older silver style PSU" is it an A2M001 supply or just an Astec AA 11040B? They were also silver and came in Apple IIe's, were used for replacements in all models (I've had them in everything)etc. Most people are used to seeing the Gold ones but as I said I have probably a dozen machines of various ages ranging from II to IIe with the silver Astec supplies in them.
There is currently an Apple II+ case that had a serial over 1mil. I did not "watch" the listing so I don't remember if it ended or is still active but it was within the last day or so i noticed it. 1.4mil something I believe it was. No MOBO just PSU, Bottom plate, top case and I forget if keyboard or not.
I found that one you mentioned. Wow.. it is very similar. And the one I'm speaking of has an A2M001 psu also..
I'd love to have that PSU for the Rev.0 I have by the way!
(sorry, couldn't resist!)
That is odd that an original PSU is in a late model II+......actually any II+ from what I've seen.
Curiouser and curiouser.
Could just be a replacement someone picked up on eBay when their original released it's inner smoke.
Is there a picture of what all this equipment looks like? A picture of the serial number sticker?
That would be most illuminating.
