Howdy folks ,
quick question..
Is there any real practical reasons for taking a gs up to the max 8mb of ram ?
been looking at various ram cards and it's bending my mind that an 8mb of ram cost 200+ bucks.
thanx..

No.
On the other hand... four meg is useful. It gives you room for essentially every GS program out there. (There was one game that made use of eight meg, in order to single-load something big like video... there was a discussion about it recently, but I can't remember where it was now; here or FB or wherever.) So, no.
4MB does just fine. 1MB is OK but 4MB makes it purr with nary a hiccup!

I heard that if you want to run Wolfenstein, you need a iigs with the works. 8MB RAM, and an accelerator at top speed to make that game run even at a decent speed.
The accelerator is strongly recommended, but you don't need that much RAM. 4MB is still fine.
thank you all for your help guys,
Has anyone ordered/built the GGLabs 4mb gs ram card lately ?
The GGlabs 4mb kit ram card is what I am thinking hard about ordering.
Why GGlabs does not have a kit for the 8mb card or will just sell me a bare pcb I dunno..
on facebook reactive micro has a new 8mb card in the works, has anyone heard any clues about how much these are going to cost ? What's really exciting to me is the twgs clone board they are working on. I am Xing my fingers that these boards will priced in a range that mere mortals can afford.
imo, best bang for the buck is the briel 4mb simm card. it shows up once and awhile on ebay, which is where i purchased mine, but if you need it asap, go to brielcomputers website and inquire. had mine for a couple of years and thrown everything at it and it does the job.
I just ordered, received, and installed one of the GGLabs 4M RAM cards. Gabriele delivered the card quickly (less than a week) and it works perfectly. Also, at only $80, it's the least expensive brand new 4M RAM card out there.
There is one of the aforementioned SIMM-based RAM cards on eBay, but at $115, I don't see the attraction. I suppose you could upgrade it to 8M if you could find some 2M DIMMs in whatever format it uses (SDRAM? DDR? DDR2?)
The 8MB card is not currently available as a kit is because I ran out of bare PCBs.
I have more on order and should arrive in 2-3 weeks. If you are interested in being notified of the availability, feel free to send me a message.
Nice to read about a card that exists - even nicer would be placing a link to the site with that card.... ?

I need to Budget for a couple of these...

Why is it that most of these ram cards are not 100% DMA compatible?
