Vulcan 20MB Hard Drive

Lucked out and found a 20MB Applied Engineering Vulcan hard drive (Apple II - not IIGS) on eBay a day or three ago. There is plenty of documentation available online, including disk images, etc.

Now I just need to find a controller card .... (yeah, I know)

There are a couple for sale on eBay but how do I tell if its the right controller? I seem to be finding that the majority of these are targeted at the IIGS and not a II+ which is what I hope to install it in.

Anyone have any experience with these? Or better yet have a controller card squirreled away somewhere?

Jennifer

I think there are distinct ROMs for IIGS and IIe. So you'll need to keep an eye out on that.

What's the manufacturer/model# of the drive? I have an Applied Ingenuity card that might work.

Hi Jeff!

It says its a Western Digital WD93028-A.

Think that would work?

Aw, sorry. That drive uses the AT interface; the AI board only works with XT drives.

Re: Vulcan 20MB Hard Drive

The Vulcan cards are the same except for the ROM. AE likely sold very few Vulcans for the II+ and I haven’t heard of anyone coming across one.

If you want to run a hard drive with a II+ then I’d suggest your easiest to find possibilities would be an Apple Rev C SCSI card or a CFFA card.

The ROM Version Number on that one says 1.4 E20.

Will that work?

Re: Vulcan 20MB Hard Drive

The E on that is for IIe so it won't work in a II+. I've tried my IIe Vulcan in a II+ without any luck.

Re: Vulcan 20MB Hard Drive

Found a card, but it has the IIe ROM.

Also found what I think is the right ROM image... Anybody out the able to burn/write (whatever the term is) this out for me?

The ROM image is here: http://ae.applearchives.com/all_apple_iis/vulcan/

Ps: also possibly posted here: http://www.applefritter.com/files/AE%20Vulcan%20VUL%201.42E20%20-%2027128.zip

But that one does have the E in the name which we believe might not work in a II+
