Apple-1 carrying & storage case

I’ve been looking for a safe, secure, and convenient way to transport and store my Mimeo board...a solution that will also work if/when I get my hands on an original Apple-1 board. At work we use Pelican cases often, so I went down that route and selected their 1495 “laptop” case with a custom foam insert. Here is the finished product:

Pelican does offer an anti-static PU foam option, but it is generally designed for single use. The way the boards sit in this particular foam, all the pins on the pack of the board are touching the foam and so are grounded to each other so static is less of a problem. The case itself is both water & shock proof, and can withstand high temperatures (but is not fire proof). This particular model includes a combination lock and can accommodate additional padlocks. It also comes with a shoulder strap.

More info on the case can be found on the Pelican website at:
http://www.pelican.com/us/en/pro/product/watertight-protector-hard-cases/medium-case/laptop-case/1495/

If you live in the US, you can order custom foam directly from Pelican at:
https://www.pelicanfoam.com

If you live outside the US, you can order the case with their “pick & pluck” foam that allows you to mold it to a particular shape...not as elegant.

Are you saying the foam you used is the anti-static type? In what way is it intended for single use?

Re: Apple-1 carrying & storage case

The foam I got is not anti-static. It is somewhat conductive and the design of the Apple-1 board means that all the components touch the foam (back of the board) and so are less prone to damage from static. The Apple-1 is not that sensitive to static to begin with. The anti-static foam becomes less effective over time, so I didn’t bother.

I’d still keep it in an anti-static bag and then put it in the case. I have a similar setup for moving original Apple-1s around but always put them in an anti-static bag also.

I sought out the same model pelican case for mine as well. It handled the flight to VCF East 9.1 without issues. Security didn't even stop me for a second look at what was inside it.

I also wrap the items that I place within it.

OK, I’ve ordered some 10” x 16” anti-static bags just in case as you suggest. Dubai is humid year round so we don’t have too many problems with static, but better safe than sorry I guess.

As I expected, the 10x16 anti-static bags are a bit too snug...anyone found any online that are slightly larger that fit well?

I think the bags I have are 18"x24" and I just fold them under.

Re: Apple-1 carrying & storage case

I’ve started a new project...a wall display case for my Mimeo. I’m planning for this to be hinged to allow me to remove the board for when I intend to use it. Feedback welcome before I attempt to build it.

Re: Apple-1 carrying & storage case

I bought a perfectly sized and hinged shadow box which I keep a blank Apple-1 replica hanging on my wall. I got it at Hobby Lobby pretty cheaply with a 40% coupon they always have, if you wait they are periodically on 50% off sale. I had actually bought it for a real Apple-1 but wound up selling that board.

No point in making your own unless you want to match some special decour.

Cheers,
Corey

Sorry pain to get it off the wall right now to take some shots of the case open, I'd have to de-cable my Scelbi so I don't risk breaking anything and there are a lot of cables hooked into that machine right now.

Cheers,
Corey

Thanks...that’s good enough for me to get a sense of what it looks like.
