Changing Video Resolution

I've got a 6100/66 souped up with a Newer G3/240 and a PDS A/V card. I have one of those Mac to VGA adapters to connect it to a 17' Magnavox monitor.

However, it only allows a max resolution of 640x480, when the monitor can do 1024x768.

Is there software to override the available resolutions? Even 800x600 would be preferable to this - Applefritter sucks at 640x480!

Mac to VGA adapter?

What kind of Mac to VGA adapter are you using? Does it have switches?

Nope

No switches on this particular adapter.

Trash & Zap

Trashed the Monitor and Sound Preference folder, restarted and zapped PRAM. Same result.

Well... I got bad news for ya....

I've used a number of Mac to VGA adapters in the last few months, and I've found that unless the adapter is configurable, you will only get 640X480 VGA...

But, for the sake of knowing, what make/model of adapter is it?

Dunno

To tell you the truth, I have no idea... It came in a bag of misc Mac items that my mother-in-law gave me, along with a USB Mac mouse, some misc cables and a PowerBook video cable (unknown model).

The only idenification on the adapter is a white sticker with F3H931 in black letters.

It's called SuperRez, and it

It's called SuperRez, and it won't help you. Your adapter only has the right sense pins for 640 x 480. There are, however adapters are made that have better resolutions. I have about 20 Apple branded ones that can do 640 x 480, 800 x 600, 1024 x 768, 1152 x 870, and 1280 x 960. I also have a strange one that I don't know the brand that does 832 x 624.

You need a different adapter, otherwise you're not going to get anywhere.

NEC

That 832x624 one that I gave you came with an older NEC 15" VGA monitor. 'Twas an adaptor to let you use it with an older Mac.

That's true probably +95% of the time, anyway. (I suspect they were all bought with Macintosh LCs, and the same population has just been circulating ever since. Sort of like nickles.)

However, there *are* "Multisync" adapters with no switches, that have the sense lines set up so all modes available on the machine are "unlocked". One came with my Nokia 21" monitor. It's physically indistinguishable from the other kind, of course, so...
