Toshiba T5200 (acquisition)

The Toshiba T5200 was used by our company for years as a network sniffer... now that we have network monitoring and sniffer software running on much better machines, the T5200 was brought into my office, also known as "Limbo"... ya'see, "Limbo" is where company computers go until it is determined that they are usuable by anyone for anything or if they are headed straight for the recycler...

I can't bring myself to let this little beauty go, though.

The specs:

20 mhz i80386 processor
12 MB RAM
200 MB HD
10Base-T NIC

Now I just have to figure out what I'm going to do with this thing... The orange gas-plasma screen is just about the coolest thing I've seen in a long time...

I'd put Win 3.1 on it and use it for Solitaire.

or if you're adventurous and slightly masochistic you could try running a UNIXoid OS on it too.

Ooooh.

I've always wanted a Toshiba 5100/5200. (Or even a 3100, the 286 version.) As noted, the orange gas plasma display is, well, too fricking cool. Just be careful... they are prone to burn-in.

As for suggestions for using the thing, well... I'd probably just use it as a terminal. As for OSes, well... Linux or FreeBSD would crush the poor thing. For UNIXoids I'd suggest Minux, perhaps. Or just use it as a really *cool* DOS machine. (It'd run multitasking environments like DesqView or DR-DOS just fine.) It's a shame PC/GEOS isn't available in a free version anymore.

I bought a cool ibm plasma sc

I bought a cool ibm plasma screen lunchbox a couple years ago. I like you guys just loved the plasma screen. The one I got I beleive is a 486.

I actually was wondering if it would be possible (since this is a lunchbox model) to hack in a newer pentium motherboard of some sort and then hook up the video to the plasma.

It already has win 3.1 and the first thing I did with it was to run Solitare. LOL

On 20Mhz Win 3.1 will be a bi

On 20Mhz Win 3.1 will be a bit slow. But however it will fit.Put also Calmira (free shell for Win 3.1 that make it look 98-smish XP-ish or with Stilletto you can make it even like Mac; there is also one DOS-shell that looks Mac-stile if you will use it for file manipulation only)

With Win 3.1 you can also put a lot of old games some userfull programs and even could make it use Internet with IE 3.

If you use a DOS shell you can also fit old games but not for Win 3.1 + Userfull programs and Arachne - the best DOS I-net browser ever (works even on a 286 with CGA has dialer and integrated GUI).

You can try Linux ,but this doesn't have enough horse power to run GUI, so you'll stick to the text interface.

There are also other options for OS for this machine- GEM (This is cool) and VisiOn (Also ,but there are no applications for it.)

DOS...

I currently have DOS on it, and have it networking via IP... Now I just need an SSH client, a telnet client, and a command line email client, and I'll be good to go!

Yup, all my laptops which are

Yup, all my laptops which are not Pentium are using as folows :

Toshiba T1200 : GEM 3 (My cousin is using it as an old game box the 20Mb HDD is compressed to 35Mb and filled with almost 50 old classics like RamPage ,Dangerous Dave, Bubble Bobble.....)

Compaq Contura 3/25 - 25Mhz 386 - Win 3.1 + Calmira (Slow) I have FreeDos on it and I'll try using Seal ,but with it's transperancy it is a bit slow on it.

AcerNote 760i - 50Mhz 486 - Win 3.1 + Calmira (I don't use it ,It's broken)

But as I can see you prefer text prompt and you'll use it for serious work.Too bad that it won't run Win 95 (well it could ,but it will turn into your nightmare...) so you'll have the best choice on telnet and SSH clients - PuTTY. If you want to use it for networking purproses better use Small Linux - it is super - it has a networking package with everything and even a GUI, and it works on 386.

PuTTY?

I thought PuTTY was a 32-bit app... I didn't know there was a DOS/Win3x version available... If you have a link, please share...

Aye, there's the stuff...

Aye, there's the stuff...

I'm just trying to get the 3Com 3C505 packet driver to load correctly. Once I get that to happen, then I'll be ssh'in all over the place.

The following is simply for Google:

I have downloaded SSHDOS and configured the wattcp.cfg correctly (as far as I know). What is holding me back is getting the 3C505 packet driver to load so that SSHDOS will run. The packet driver is simply labled as 3c505.com, but must be run with the packet interupt number (packet_int_no), and I can't find what that is. Every reference that I've found online recommends 0x7e, but that won't work... I get "3C505 apparently not present at this address".

I decided to do some more research. I found one site that states that the 3C505 requires not just the packet driver and packet interrupt number, but the hardware interrupt number, the I/O address, and the memory base address. The usage would look like:

\path-to-packet-driver\3C505.com 0x7e 2 0x300 0xd000

This means that my testing criteria has increased 7-fold.

If I get it to work, I'll edit this post

Oh, it's likely a P70/75 that's got an upgrade if it's really a 486. Pentiums would be tough to do for a 386 MCA based mobo.
