A/UX on Quadra 950: Questions

I have couple of questions regarding a Quadra 950 and A/UX. Given that Quadra 950 (and 900) has a problem with running Linux (combination of running Linux and using the keyboard and monitor as far as I understand it) I was thinking about installing A/UX on it. So my questions are:

1) I know that I can run XWindows in rooted on it but how about installing some nice window managers on top? For example something relatively light like WindowMaker? Are there going to be some obvious problems? Missing libraries or lack of recent compilers?

2) Does anyone know if A/UX has software RAID built in? If not, how was RAID implemented on the Q950 when it came out (through SCSI cards?)?

3) What kind (size) of HD were the Q950 "designed" to house at the time (I'm toying with setting it up like it would have been in 1993 by someone having a lot of money then or putting several ~10-20GB SCSI drives in it along with RAID and use it as a backup)?

OK, that's enough for now. I'll probably have some more questions later if I get any answers.

Thanks

IC

I Have used A/UX and can awns

I Have used A/UX and can awnser some of your questions:

1) it comes with twm, runnung on X11R4, you can, however, get X11R5 (and even R6) patches for a/ux. I have no idea about other window managers though, as i only ever used twm

2) dunno, but i doubt it, hardware RAID was more common then

3) I think 4GB is the maximum size fsck can chech at startup, but afterwards it can check larger drives, so i recommend a HD smaller than 4GB, or partition some big drives. The Apple 4GB Drive was the biggest avaliable at the time AFAIK.

A/UX 3.0.1 comes with Retrospect for backing up to an apple 40Mb tape drive, I never used it as i never got tcp/ip to work porperly, now the IIsi i ran it on runs 7.5.3, and may soon be a web server

Also, if you do want to use it as a web server, then only use A/UX 3.0.2, as 3.1 and later (3.1.1 was the last) do not work with it (they crash when launching the httpd deamon, apparantly)

X11 A/UX

Admittedly, I only fooled around with it for a few days, but I'll say I had nearly zero luck compiling *anything* X-related under A/UX, using either the Apple compiler or gcc 2.7.2. Installing X11/R5 or R6 libraries would probably help if you can find them, but... don't expect to be able to just grab a tarball and run ./configure.

Re: A/UX on Quadra 950: Questions

AFAIK A/UX doesn't have software RAID, but don't quote me on that. The Apple Workgroup Server 95 was a Q950 with a special PDS card that implemented extra, (relatively) high-speed SCSI buses and accelerated video. AFAIK any RAID setup would be run off that.

3) What kind (size) of HD were the Q950 "designed" to house at the time (I'm toying with setting it up like it would have been in 1993 by someone having a lot of money then or putting several ~10-20GB SCSI drives in it along with RAID and use it as a backup)?

The Q950 came standard with one 250MB, 500MB or 1GB 50-pin SCSI hard drive. The AWS95 was the same, except it also had an option for a 2GB HD.
