Hello all,
Today I tried to copy several DSK files to real 5.25" floppy diskettes, out of 5 DSK files, only 2 worked (Copy II Plus 8.4, Pac-man), the rest, Choplifter, Karateka, Digdug did not work - 2 of the 3 just spinning the drive, without head moving, and 1 just drop me to Monitor.
Note these are all DSK files, not WOZ files, and they all worked in Virtual ][, AppleWin emulator, they also all worked with a real Apple //e with Floppy Emu. I thought they all had copy protection removed, as DSK file doesn't contain copy protection information.
As to how I did the DSK -> 5.25 Floppy, I have tried a) ADT Pro over serial, which gave me the working Copy II Plus 8.4 and Pac-man. I have also tried Copy II Plus to copy disk - Floppy Emu(6,1) -> Floppy(6,2).
So I am puzzled. why the DSK file works in emulators, but not after written to a really floppy? Also, is Apple Sauce the only game to create perfect floppy from image file (woz, etc)?
Thanks
As someone pointed out to me once, disk images aren’t made with the intention of restoring them to real disks. Some formats were even DESIGNED with the explicit intention nobody would ever try it (because... huh?). It’s not something that would have ever occurred to me, since to me emulation is not something that ever crosses my mind. Why try to experience a vintage computing experience.... without the vintage computing experience? Apparently 95% of people disagree.
Go in understanding restoring to original media was not the intention people had when they made these images. You’ll generally download 2, 3, or 4 images of a disk before you find one that works when restored to an actual disk. Or you won’t find one at all. I don’t think .NIB or .WOZ images even can be reconverted. How that makes any sense, I don’t know.
All that said, I’ve found DSK2FILE the best program for success with this endeavor with .DSK images.
I don't undestand how you do. I use ADT and I've no problem.
It's right that some disks are bad on asimov
I have floppy emulators but usually I just use them long enough to copy the program to a real floppy. I always use Copy II Plus. However it’s almost always programs I copy, rarely games.
Games are much more likely to have a form of copy protection which may be what you’re running into.
