RAMWorks II Card

I was thinking of buying a RamWorks II card with 1mb of memory to go in my auxilary slot. My question is, will it work with my existing 1mb ram expansion that is in slot 5, giving me a total of 2mb of memory? I asked the guy selling the card, but he had never heard of a ram expansion that would work in anything other than the aux slot. Thanks in advance for the help.

Well, what _do_ you have, exactly? A slinky card?

To be honest, I'm not sure. It is made by Apple, if I remember correctly. I think it has a plcc chip on it with memory chips, and it is in slot 5, and shows up as 1024K, 2048 blocks. It shows up as /RAM5 under ProDOS.

I think this is it. http://www.applelogic.org/files/AIIMEMEXPHIRES.jpg

Yep, that's a slinky card. It's automatically seen as a RAM drive by ProDOS based on its firmware. Software with drivers (like AppleWorks) can also use it by disconnecting and reclaiming the RAM drive. But it's not the same kind of expansion as the RamWorks II; you can use the two at the same time in the sense that the Slinky could continue to be a RAM drive, and the RamWorks II could be used by another app. But 1+1 does not equal 2 in this case.

Do you remember the PC DOS days with extended vs. expanded memory? They were both memory, and both gave you more, but they didn't add to each others' totals. That's the equivalent of what you have here.

Re: RAMWorks II Card

Yeah, I remember the early DOS PC days, and the issue of only being able to use so much RAM, and that some programs could use the extended RAM. I can't remember right off hand, but it seems like 640K or something was the most DOS could use. Anyway, I think I'll try for the RAMWorks II card. It'll be nice to have in my AIIe. Thanks, David, for the help. I have the 80 column/64K expansion in the slot right now, and I am assuming the RAMWorks II would replace that. I have a CFFA3000 in my IIgs, and hopefully, if there is another run, will get another one for my IIe. I really appreciate it, and while I've got you on this thread, thanks for ADTPro. It is an awesome piece of software, and I use it a lot. You do a great job on it.

Yep, remember Lotus/Intel/Microsoft (LIM)/EMS? Ah, those were the days. Wink And before anyone jumps on Bill Gates and the 640k question...

Thanks a lot. I do enjoy a good excuse to write 6502 assembler.
