SSC Revisions

Maybe I'm crazy and going down a rabbit hole here.  But looking at an SSC card, I started wondering what the different revisions are.  I've seen people refer to them as revision A, B and C.  Maybe other letters, but seems to usually be one of those 3.  Most people seem to base that off the letter stamped at the end of the part number in the lower left.  And, there seem to be at least two variations of the Apple part number - 670-0020 and 670-8020.  Looking photos of these two part number cards, All the ICs appear to be laid out the same, discreet components all seem to be in the same spots.  A very, very cursory review of visible traces seem to be the same.  Both are silk screened almost 99% the same.  Both carry the 1981 copyright and same component numbers.  What differs seems to be the Apple logo and FCC ID are placed in different places.  It's tough to see any real difference in the hardware.

Which makes me think there is no validity to basing a revision based off the stamped letter.  The one thing I have seen, is two different ROM part numbers.  The ROM is always either 341-0065-A or 341-0065-B.  Although the B variant seems to be the one in most images.  But in searching Apple ROM part numbers, only the A variant seems to come up in results for the SSC.  Also, on Asimov there appears to be a dump of the A ROM, but not the B ROM.  I really wonder what the difference is between them, if anything.  It seems odd Apple would go through the trouble of changing part numbers on both the cards and ROMs if something didn't differ.

Any thoughts?

Designs can be revised for

Designs can be revised for manufacturability reasons that have no impact on the consumer at all.

SSC Revisions

There's also a 670-0020-D version with component date codes as late as 6th week of 1994, 341-0065-B ROM, red DIP switches and FCC and AUSTRALIA regulatory markings.  eg. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/325234474154 ...  One theory is that slight variations in boards to display the regulatory markings  required by different target geographic markets at various times during the very long production run or different OEM board manufacturers were used in different manufacturing locations over the years, USA, Ireland, Singapore, Australia etc.

I wonder what the differences

I wonder what the differences in the ROM are between the reivisions.

There's an "A" revision on Asimov, have you compared that with your "B" variant ROM?

I was going to try that. I

I was going to try that. I see the Identify ][ program includes a "slot sucker" that supposedly dumps the rom from a given slot. But when I ran it, it only dumped the last maybe 1/4 of the rom. That did match with the last part of the A rom. I emailed the author to see if the program could be tweaked to dump the full rom.

I'm game to try any other method for dumping the rom that may exist with the IIe itself. But I don't have the hardware to dump the rom itself.

I have several Super Serial

I have several Super Serial Cards.  I just checked 3 of them, and all 3 have different printing on the board, including different board revision numbers, B, C & D -- the D says "AUSTRALIA").  However all of them are -B on the ROM part number.  Two of them it is on a sticker, the 3rd it is printed on the chip.

I have a couple of others but I'd have to dig them out of a closet upstairs to check to see if they have a different ROM version.
