I wonder if anyone has done this or if it is possible to convert my old Imac into a digital picture frame. tanks.

Certainly I expect it would b

Certainly I expect it would be possible, but there are much better candiates.

The iMac is going to be quite large, and not mount easily on a wall, so unless you can hide the guts of it somewhere it'll look a tad funky, to say the least.

The iMac also has a CRT screen which doesn't really resemble a picture frame in quite the same way as an LCD does.

Of course if those two reasons don't bother you, it's as simple as running a slideshow program.

Not to mention that's it would be a rather expensive running picture frame.

Gut's only

I was thinking of only using the motherboard assembly and attaching an lcd screen and perhaps using a low profile power source. what about then?

That would be much more doabl

That would be much more doable. The first issue is, do you already have a broken/spare LCD to use? Other wise the cost of getting one just ot hack up might be prohibative vs buying a laptop that you can mod.

Isn't there some issue with t

Isn't there some issue with the sync rates the iMac puts out from that internal connector, and getting a monitor that can match it?

I presume you've read the FAQ entry about laptop LCDs etc

It's the reverse. The iMac monitor itself uses bizarre sync rates, and is thus rather difficult to use as a stand-alone screen for another computer. (A question which has been asked.) The port it's connected to will drive just about anything after being fitted with a Mac-to-VGA connector.

(The only "weird thing" about the trayloader's monitor port is I don't think it has a fully implimented set of Macintosh autoconfigure sense lines, so it probably won't work properly with the old fixed-frequency Apple monitors. This is a guess based on experimentation with a Mac-to-VGA adaptor that could specifically emulate various specific monitors in addition to having a "multisync" setting.)
