unable to keep audio input from output

This is with a G4 Sawtooth, X.3...

When the audio input level is set high (high enough to get anything from my mic), I hear hum and hiss through the audio output. It appears my input is *always* being fed into the output, no matter what settings, and regardless of whether I'm recording or not. The practical problem with this is that when using any recording program, even with "playthrough" off, I have to turn the microphone off/turn volume up to playback and then microphone on/volume down to record. It's also a pain to always be moving the recording level depending on what I'm doing with the computer at the moment. If I turn up the volume (this is with an external amplifier) without turning the microphone off, I get feedback, *even while not recording!* This also happens even when no recording level windows are open (which sometimes, in some programs, causes playthrough). It's like my computer's audio is "all karaoke, all the time!"

Any ideas?

I just booted into OS 9 to check what happens there... Doesn't have this problem. So it would seem it's an OS issue, not hardware related.
