Did your iMac come with one? If so, I'd suggest running the "Advanced Tests" test suite several times in a row, and see if it turns up an error.
In my experience, the Apple systems that take DDR are *incredibly* picky about what RAM they'll be happy with. It's been an utter nightmare at work getting RAM that works properly in the Aluminum 15" PBs.
(Unfortunately, I've often experienced cases where RAM *will* pass the hardware test CD but still cause random freezes. I *know* it's the RAM, because if I rip it out and substitute two stock Apple SO-DIMMs the problems go away. But of course the "problem" RAM always works beautifully in one of the Dell laptops, so, well, I dunno who to blame.)

I just ripped out the chip and voila! it works now, without the chip. I called the place and they said that I could exchange it for a better 256MB one with a partial refund.
