Blue Screen

I have an iBook G4, from time to time when I turn on my laptop I just a get a blue screen with no icons on the bottom of the start page. There is however the small blue magnifying glass icon in the upper right, with the spinning beachball indicating something is frozen. I spent 60 dollars two times to fix this. Can someone please tell me how to go about fixing this problem when it occurs (I'm running out of money)

it just plains sounds like...

A time for a reinstall, if you have paid twice for it to be fixed. how long have you had the machine, and what OS are you running? (OS 10.3/10.4?)

magnifying glass ... seems to me

that it's got something to do with the Spotlight function integrated in 10.4.
is there something moving inside the glass (white circles / dots) or is it stationary? did you try to recreate the spotlight index?

to recreate the spotlight search index, open terminal (in utilities folder) and type the following:
sudo mdutil -E /Volumes/xyz

this will delete the index on the specific volume "xyz".
ATTENTION: after rebooting, the index will be recreated. this can take up to several hours (you will see white circles and dots moving inside of the glass of the magnifyier when spotlight is active).

if don't need speedlight, you could turn it off anyway. to turn spotlight off type the following in terminal:
sudo mdutil -i off /Volumes/xyz

xyz represents the name of your volume (shown on your desktop). after confirming with enter, terminal will most certainly ask you for the password of the admin user. type it in and confirm with enter.

i think it's most certainly a problem concerning either your data, which is indexed, or with the spotlight function itself...

First things first...

If you spent money to have this problem fixed, and you still get the problem, they should re-fix it for free. To whom are you paying the money and what exactly are they doing to resolve the problem?

Also, are you connecting to any network drives, perhaps?

Blue Screen

I am paying money to a local computer store. They will not tell me what they did to fix the problem. I asked one of the associates who works there. He said for 40 dollars more we can do a complete analysis and then they can tell me

oh man

they are just screwing you over. I would just reinstall your system, or tell them to fix it *before* you give them the money. make them *prove* to you that they fixed it, along with a detailed explanation on what they did. Then report back to us. I think you have been had Cray 2

Seriously sounds like they're just pulling your data onto a fresh reinstall or something similar.

If they won't tell you what the problem is and what they did to fix it, they are simply extorting cash from you. More than likely, they know exactly what the problem is, and they are counting on it to go wrong again.

If it were me, I would post the contact info (phone, email, web) for the store and let people know how they run their business... but that's just me... I couldn't suggest that someone else do that... that would be wrong...
