powerbooks not going to sleep

neither my albook or my wallstreet will go to sleep on its own. both computer are set to go to sleep after 10 minutes with the displays sleeping at 5. the wallstreet just stays running with the screen remaining on, and the hard drive being the only thing to turn off. the albook however shuts off its screen, but contintues running and somehow heats itself to the point that the fan turns on even though nothing is running. the wallstreet has been doing this for awhile, but the albook just began doing it this week. anyone else had this happen? if so, how did you go about fixing it? my desk is warped enough from the heat of my ibook, i don't need the wallstreet and the new albook to make it any worse.

Try these first

For Mac OS 9 or Mac OS X:

1) Reset the PMU (Power Management Unit). Procedures vary by model, so use the search feature at apple.com's knowledge base. Try search parameters like "reset pmu wallstreet" or "reset pmu powerbook aluminum."

2) Reset the PRAM. Restart the computer. When you hear the chime, hold down the following four keys simultaneously: [Apple]-[Option]-[letter P]-[letter R]. Continue to hold down all four keys until the Mac has chimed at least three more times. The Mac will now start normally.

3) Reset the NVRAM. (This will work on the AlBook for sure, but I'm not sure whether the Wallstreet has Open Firmware. You can always try with the Wallstreet, I suppose.) Restart the computer. When you hear the chime, hold down the following four keys simultaneously: [Apple]-[Option]-[letter O]-[letter F]. The Mac will boot to a grey screen with black text: this is Open Firmware. Type the following commands exactly as they appear here, ending each line by pressing [Return]:

reset-nvram
reset-all

The Mac should now start normally.

For Mac OS X only:

4) Repair permissions. Go to [your hard drive]>Applications>Utilities and open the Disk Utility. Allow the list of drives to fully populate. Select the system partition on your primary hard drive. Click the First Aid tab, then click the button to "Repair Permissions." Once finished, a restart wouldn't hurt anything.

Please let us know whether this has helped at all.

Insomniac PB...

My advice, if it's not sleeping, is to either:

A) Tell it to count sheep.

or

Dirol Tuck it in, give it a mug of Horlicks and sing it a lullaby. That one used to work with me when I couldn't sleep!
