I put this under hardware hacking as this is not for hardware support with "HELP HELP MY IMAC DOESN'T WORK!!!" This is mearly an ask for a workaround on this system. to give you the scoop, here it goes:
About 2 days ago, my mom's iMac DV Summer 2001 Series, stopped working. After poking around, I noticed that the 12v Line to the HDD has dropped off the map, in other words, the 12v line has no power running thru it. Not even barely a trickle. What I need to know is:
1. Is there a place I can pull the 12v off the board or the PSU to get it another feed?
2. I don't care if it is difficult to do it, i can work in CRT's, the question is "How?"
3. Is this even do-able?
I need to do this, as my mom can't afford a FW400 case for her to put her HDD in it, and is taking this to school, so with her kids there, she really can't keep one on her desks, without her kids knocking it off, or playing with it.
I am up to this task, not only to save money, but I also got nothing else to do.
Please help me, oh guru's of the WWW!
One thing you could do is attach a molex connector to a 12v wallwart, and just use that along with the iMac's 5v.
Get a laptop IDE drive, an IDE adapter, and fab up a bracket. Laptop drives only require 5v to operate.
My dad suggested that, and it just so happens that my dad ordered a new hard drive for his Dell Latitude Laptop. He got a 100GB Hard drive, so his 20GB is basically free to use. He is going to check at his work and find an adapter that he keeps in his desk there.
So, now we just gotta do is make the drive brackets. Also, we will have to do the transfer, but that is easy, as I have a FW Case (one of the reasons we are not using that, is that I am reluctant to give it up, since I use it for my home business) and we can do the transfer.
Anyway, thanks, and sorry for creating the needless post. However, a part of me wanted to do the hack. I hadn't done one in a while and wanted to do an adventure in hardware hacking. Oh well, I will get something the next time around.
Anyways, the iMac had a brand new 20GB, and we will be replacing it with a 20GB drive, so it is about the same. Although... the speed won't be the same for access times. So it might turn out to be a tad slower that it used to be, but for a machine this old, no one is probably going to notice.
Thanks all!

secured a 20GB laptop drive with a convertor and the system is puring happily now. I just threw the desktop drive into my firewire case and cloned it to the laptop drive. My mom is very happy now.
Thanks for all the suggestions!
