If you've got any old mac, any apple branded scsi drive should work fine. I'm pretty sure any old scsi drive would work, but I seem to recall a firmware thing...Anybody? Anyways...I've got a couple that work. $5 for the lot + shipping.
So when the Dolls come to my town, if I give you a cd drive, could I get tickets to see you guys?
Using a non-Apple drive will require modifying the CD drivers, or using a pre-patched set (OS 7.6 drivers work unpatched with third-party CD-ROM drives).
...I also moved this out of the Market place, as the poster is looking for advice as much as a replacement drive.
What is the fastest speed Apple cd-rom drive the performa 635 will accomodate without major adaption? If I came across a 4X drive, would it work? 6X? ...
I am new to Apple Fritter ... but I appreciate any other tips relating to this computer (635CD Performa), too.
Thank you!
You can use any Apple branded scsi cd-rom drive, up to and including the 12x from the late-model PCI-based PowerMacs.
Connections at the back of the drive will all be the same.
The cd-rom drive in those models uses a plastic adapter between the standard scsi/power connectors and the edge connector the drive slides into. Pull it off the old drive, and it should fit in the new one without any trouble.
Thank you to each of you that responded.
I had no clue so many apple cd-roms would work in this machine.
Wow!
Thank you!
