Laptop For School

Hi

I currently go to Kristin, a private school in New Zealand that uses IBM Laptops (specifically, the T series. Mine's a T43). Anyway, we hand the laptops in at the end of this year, (they were on lease) and they get formatted, redistributed, etc.

So, in the Senior School, we don't have laptops. However, I think a laptop at school is imperative for doing assignments and answering email, taking notes etc.

Considering I just want a machine that will run -

Office 2004 (2007?)
FirstClass 8.3 Education
Firefox
iTunes, iMovie (not often, doesn't need to be quick)
and maybe one or two other small programs

and do the net on wireless 802.11b or g

Considering this is a year and a half away, I'm thinking I should just buy a second hand iBook G4?

By then, the G3 will be well and truly out of date and I wouldn't go there.

How would this sound?

iBook G4

G4 933mhz
640MB RAM
40GB Hard Disk
CD-RW/DVD-ROM
Ethernet
AirPort 802.11b

?

The current cost I'm seeing on TradeMe is about $600-800 NZD. = About $420-560 USD. I thought that was a little steep, but prices should drop.

It wouldn't need anything more than an hour or so battery life.

Your thoughts?

You might want to try a low end G4 Powerbook

or wait for the next Gen iBook (right after the one you described) The early G4 iBooks have the same issues with the video as the G3 iBook *shudders*
The G4 PowerBooks, like the 12" works great, and has good features. I would say, even an 867Mhz 12" is plenty, and it's cheap! If you need more storage space, get an External drive. Better yet, try to get a laptop with USB 2.0 if anything. will make everything a lot easier. especially when you migrate stuff from one machine to another through flash drive/external drives/etc...
