processor swapping

anyone who's new to soldering, don't overclock your powerbook. my processor is burned up with 3 resistors missing and their pads destroyed... so i need a new processor for the wallstreet. not much on ebay, but i just looked at imac processors. same form factor, but the bus, rom, and second cache are different. if i remember correctly, don't those three factors prevent imac processors from working in the wallstreet? if they could, that would certainly be nice due to the wide selection of them for much less than processors for the wallstreet.

nope

As I had the same question awhile back, I'll answer this.

They can physically fit into each other, but they will not work. Different in all those respects you mentioned, plus they don't share the same pinout. While I never actually swapped between them, I expect you'd run the risk of frying something if you actually powered it up.

There was a guy on some forum

There was a guy on some forum somewhere that swore he was running a 300MHz iMac CPU in his Wallstreet for over a year so I tried it. All it did was run the fan and get hot. I shut it down immediately and put the PB CPU back in and all was fine luckily.

So much for what you read on some forums......

I can definitely say it will not boot.

alright, well i'll just searc

alright, well i'll just search for another wallstreet cpu. i might just have a friend who has access to really good soldering equipment put dip switches on a new one that i'll just buy. at least that way i don't destroy it other than maybe leave the machine on too long while clocked too high. i'd rather overclock another old one that invest so much in an upgrade.
