ideal albook ram?

albook 15" 1ghz with 256 mb of ram. with me browsing the web while on ichat and listening to music, you can imagine why it's driving me mad. i want to get more ram for this thing, but i have one major issue with it: one of the ram slots no longer works, and it's not covered under apple's recall program (though it covers LATER models which are practically the same). so with only one slot at my disposal, i want about 1 gig of ram. is there anything that's reliable, but still relatively cheap?

i don't remember if you can do this

are you able to swap the board out with a faster model? it might be just less of a hassle and probably better for the machine if you can find a different board for it. 1GB Ram modules for it are going to be EXPENSIVE

this is my main computer. switching out the board would be a pain in the ass. i refuse to pay apple to repair it as well.

They go for about $80 on Newegg.

well AFAIK

OS X isn't as picky with new ram (and machines aren't) as the old machines/ram were. I have put about 4 generic sticks or ram in this iBook G4 1.2Ghz since I got the machine, and NEVER had the problem of not being able to run the computer.

So, i would just go with generic. mostly even the generic ram is built to specs the higher-end ram is. it's just that the Higher-End ram will last 5-10 more years than the generic, or is easier and stabler to overclock. I would just say, get the least expensive ram you can find, and call it a win

yea i was just thinking that

yea i was just thinking that generic ram from a good company would work well enough for this computer. i just need more memory so i can do tasks without noticing it slowing down (which it typically does when the ram gets full). i'll look and see what i can find.
