problem getting a colour image from my IIe

Hi everyone,

I recently managed to obtain 2 Apple IIe computers that were headed for the garbage.
I cleaned them up and attached them to a composite monitor, but I can only get monochrome
graphics on my monitor. I live in Australia, which is a PAL based and therefore my
monitor is also PAL and I assumed both of my apples were too.
I then attached them to a colour TV with composite inputs that support both NTSC and PAL
and once again, only monochrome output when set to NTSC and PAL.
I opened the case and the motherboard clearly says NTSC, but further reading online told
me
"One way to tell which video standard a IIe uses is the location of the Aux Slot. If it is
on the side of the motherboard near the power supply, you have an NTSC model. If it is in line
with Slot 3, you have a PAL model."
The location of the Aux slot says it's PAL (despite the silkscreen on the MB saying otherwise)

Is there something obvious that I'm not doing right (these are the first apples I have ever
owned and it's been over 20 years since I actually used one and I don't have any manuals)

BTW Both machines are identical and the monitor/TV produces beautiful colour images from my
Atari 800XL and C64, so it's not the monitor.

Colour and Aussie IIe's

Hi Chris,

I recall having this problem myself. From memory, there is a colour kill switch of some sort inside the cover on the right hand side of the logic board. Its black with a white slider. Flick this switch and your colour should come back. (As long as your AUX slot is under neath SLOT#3, the switch should exist.)

best regards,
Steve

Thanks

Thanks Steve,

When I get home, I'll look for the switch and give it a flick

I couldn't find a switch

I couldn't see any switches on the MB (apart from J19 that is connected to a toggle on the underside of the case that didn't seem to change anything).

About an inch to the right of the DIP paddle socket there is a space labeled "TEST" that might have once had a slide switch, but it was just an empty space on both of my machines.

BTW after a bit of further checking I can confirm it is a "Platinum" 2e
