sorry for the double post but id like to mention, im planning on making this my wifi wardriving machine
You could install Mac OS X on it using XPostFacto. I'd recommend Panther. It runs fine on my beige G3 with stock 6MB video card. It might run half decent on yer PutterBook.
but the 1400 series are limited to 64mb ram
I may be telling you something you already know, but choose your wifi card wisely. I had an Enterasys Roamabout card in my 1400, it worked for a day and quit. I sold that one and got an Orinoco Silver WaveLAN and it has made all the difference.
Also, with the linitation on memory, you may want to just keep 9.1 and use tomeviewer (search on versiontracker it should pop up) to extract what you need to use Airport software, which should enable use of classicstumbler for your wardriving efforts.
Again, probably you have done all of this already and I am preaching to the choir.
The 1400 is also great for case mods. Krylon fusion paints are great and the texture of the case comes right through--if thats what you want. Maybe a pirate theme--skull and crossbones, etc--in line with your wardriving efforts? Been done to an ibook. Check it out and see.
Good luck!!
P.S.--if you or anyone else knows where I can get an upgrade like yours--233 or 266--for my 1400 cheap--around $100--please PM me. Thanks!
Mac os x will not run on a 1400
uhh... On a stock, you would be right. But with G3 and X
Post Facto, you are wrong.
Nope. Even with a G3 upgrade it wont run os x. Also, the 64mb ram limit would make the machine crawl in os x.
. . . it's STILL a NuBus Architecture 'Book, so no X or CardBus upgrades are available . . . yet!
As single board form factors shrink, the RAM allotments on large IC dies increase, IC design possibly goes 3-D and stamp size CPUs become more powerful, you never really know what might end up in a 603e signal compatible QFP IC transplant or on PowerBook processor card upgrades!
PowerBooks are certain to be the '57 Chevy/early Mustang of a future retro laptop craze. All kinds of neat stuff will wind up in them, just don't hold your breath!

thanks for the replies!
although this powerbook is limited in terms of real RAM, i have found out about a way to get around this by installing a PC-Card to Compact Flash adapter - then use a compactflash card as virtual memory. :coolmac:
With regards to wireless, i have found www.macwireless.com have some good non-cardbus 802.11b cards for sale, although a tad expensive.

I got my orinoco 802.11b non cardbus for $30. Go to this site:
www.penmachine.com/techie/airport1400.html
There he talks about all the card options.
