Can I Hook up my Mac Plus to my PC?

I was looking on ebay and found a cable that goes from macintosh serial to pc

serial. I was wondering if I could hook my mac plus to my pc with that cable

and transfer files. I have no way of getting files to my mac plus, so I would

be excited if this works. If anybody can help, please do. Thanks so much.

YUP!

If the cable has a "null modem" pinout you should have no problem running something like Z-Term on the Plus and Terminal on the PC to do file transfers. If it's NOT a null modem pinout, get yourself an inexpensive null modem adapter for the PC end of the cable. IIRC, some of the early Palm serial connect cables needed an adapter like that to work from Mac to PC.

p.s. check out the Mac-PC file transfer info on gamba2.

I don't know what a null modem is. I'm really only a newbie.
Thanks,

Like a modem cable, for conne

Like a modem cable, for connecting your computer to a modem, except two of the wires are crossed over. You can connect a computer to each end, and each computer thinks it is plugged into a modem, and send stuff to each other that way. You get full serial speed which can be about four times what a real modem will give you.

You'll probably need to select "null modem" in the modem control panel on each machine, or use some direct serial transfer programs. See gamba2 for more details.

Won't be a n00b for long . . .

. . . if you keep asking the right questions, providing the proper info and the level of answer you're looking for without being prompted like you're doing now, kid!

Since it's a Newton-2-PC cable, you should be able to determine the pinout by asking in "other Computers" here or the Newton forum at the 68kMLA, my guess it's already got the "crossover" implemented for "handshaking" between two computers sans modem hardware. On the Mac side of the RDF, a "printer cable" is equivalent to a "null modem" cable in the real life and a "straight thru" or "switchbox cable" is equivalent to a "serial cable" IRL.

I'm sure you've already googled "gamba2" . . . but on the off chance you haven't . . . do so or look for the link in the buttons on my sig!

p.s. don't take offence at my use of the term 'kid" . . . unless you're already on the AARP mailing list . . . from this cantankerous old coot, it's a token of respect, as others have learned when taking me to task for calling them that!

my way

well, the way I transfer the files to my mac is very simple: I use my inexpensive Mac LC III, which I purchaced off ebay for $10, installed a PDS ethernet card, installed PC MACLAN on this computer, and I transfer files to it via a wireless ethernet connection, unstuff them, and then it's on to my Mac Plus. heck, I just did a clean install of 6.0.8 that way. Offtopic: the LC III can *almost* do internet. I have it all configured in MacTCP, going by the info my DSL provider gave me. (I have SBC Yahoo DSL, using a 2Wire DSL modem). problem is, there is no domain name, and MacTCP wont let me use it without one. So, in input '2Wire', and I get nothing. (I am using the iCab browser). help me. funny, it can do file transfers, but it cant browse the internet. [/offtopic] well, good luck with that PC link cable. I actually concidered buying one, but the dont show up on eBay every day. -digital Wink

you need a dns server with a domain. Download the disk images from the mac plus webserver (www.applemachome.com) go to classic and links and it is under there somewhere.

and it has a domain with a dns.

I would give up on MacTCP and install open transport. OT is the best technically constructed piece of software that ever existed for the classic Mac OS. A unix networking stack (the same one that solaris uses), beautifully integrated into the Mac OS.
