OS 8.1 should support it.

Used copy on ebay

There seem to be various versions?
os 8 os 8.1 etc.

I 'm planning on installing it on a duo 280, after i replace the 68040lc with a 68040.

I fly by the seat of my um well, my water wings. Fool

either 8 or 8.1

either 8 or 8.1 will work. 8.1 is just a small step up in the OS Version, whereas 8.5 is a whole new system. But 8.5 is PowerPC Only.

I am not sure about that...

Are you talking about an OS disk that was bundle with a PM G3 Beige? Normally, I thought that a disk that shipped with a computer, would only boot on the computer that it came with. I could be wrong though... You can just get an OS disk from any Major magazine or website mac dealer. I'm pretty sure that you can get a boxed OS 8 for about $13-$20 USD. Try MacMall or look on MacAddict's website http://www.macaddict.com

8.1 and DVDs

You'll likely need the retail version of OS 8 or 8.1. The Coius is right that the disc supplied with a G3 will likely not support installation on a 68K Mac.

I believe the retail version of the disc is white, with a large '8' on it, which might help you identify it on ebay.

Also, I'll assume you know this but just in case...while you may end up being able to access DVD discs on your 68K , you won't be able to watch any DVD movies/video.

Thanks

I was a little doubtful about the different os 8 disks on ebay so thanks for the clarification!

I was pretty sure I wouldn't be able to use it for DVD watching, but I was thinking I could use it for CD's until a stumble into another cheap CD slot loader.

I have a plan to mod an old tv console and I may use it again there later, with a power PC model. I'm hoping to find a tv/av card to put in it.

It's going to be a gift for my cousin who is netless.

I really love the mods people do with old household objects.

And, I'm amazed that so many people think they simply must have the newest bestest computer just to email and surf.

Thanks again for the responses,

Kat
