I am comparing iBooks with PowerBooks for a multiple puchase for a department I work for...
I've just been informed that PowerBooks won't sleep when the lid is closed IF a keyboard and mouse is connected (as well as an external monitor, I am guessing), however, the iBook will still sleep if the lid is closed even if all these are connected.
Can anyone confirm one way or the other?
I have a keyboard, mouse and external monitor connected to my 12" PowerBook G4 right now, and it's sleeping quite soundly.
What I'm asking is will the computer stay awake with the lid closed...
if the energy settings are set to go to sleep, that's fine... but when the mouse is moved, or keyboard tapped, with the closed lid, will the PowerBook and/or iBook wake up?
The Powerbook will, as it's designed to be able to run as a desktop. The iBook can't do this officially, as it releases a lot of heat through the keyboard and overheats reasonably easily. I believe there's a kernel hack to allow you to run an iBook with the lid closed if you really want.
So... say you have a Bluetooth Keyboard and mouse... you come into the office, open the lid to wake your computer, let the keyboard and mouse link up, plug in an external monitor, then close the lid, you're saying the PB doesn't go to sleep just because the lid is closed?
Not sure with bluetooth. According to these folks http://forums.macnn.com/showthread.php?t=187674 you just need to go to System Prefs, Bluetooth, and "Allow Bluetooth Devices to wake this computer". I don't have a BT mouse or keyboard handy to check with to confirm though.
I walk into my office, hook my Powerbook to my monitor, USB keyboard and mouse, and then hit a key on the keyboard. The Powerbook wakes up and operates while closed.
So far as vanilla OS X goes, I believe the machine always goes to sleep when you close it, no matter how many perephrials are plugged in.
