WOZNIAC-1 for Android™ - Free Purchase for Closed Testing Participants

Hello fellow Apple-1 enthusiasts,

Previously available exclusively on Apple devices, I’m now seeking your help in bringing WOZNIAC-1 to the Android platform!

Google Play requires closed testing before public release. To qualify, I need at least 12 testers who remain opted in for at least 14 consecutive days before launch. Participating is easy—just sign up, test the app, and enjoy exclusive early access!

Please note: WOZNIAC-1 is a paid app. However, for a limited time, I am offering a free purchase of the app to anyone willing to participate in closed testing. Once the Closed Testing program is complete and the app becomes publicly available on Google Play, this offer will no longer be available.

Want to shape the future of WOZNIAC-1? Be among the first to experience it on Android! Send me a private message with your Google Play email to get started.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Tim

Want WOZNIAC-1 on Android? Help Make It Happen!

While roughly 11 people have expressed interest to date, only 4 are presently enrolled in the Closed Testing program.

The good news is that promo codes are still available—if you’re interested, now’s your chance to enroll!  This is a free app purchase with no obligation to you, though I would request that you at least enroll in the Closed Testing program if you receive a promo code.

Beyond that, whatever testing you are able to do is great.  Any level of testing helps—even just installing and launching the app!

Your support is key to bringing WOZNIAC-1 to Android!

I've received excellent feedback from those who are already testing it, and I greatly appreciate their input.

If you would like to see WOZNIAC-1 on Android and you’ve been thinking about joining, now is a great time!  Send me a private message with your Google Play email to get started.

Thoughts or questions? Feel free to post them here!

Thank you,

Tim

WOZNIAC-1 for Android – Development Update

Just a quick update—

As of June 1, 2025, development on WOZNIAC-1 for Android has stopped due to low engagement during the beta testing phase. Google Play requires sustained participation by at least 12 testers—actively enrolled with the app installed—for 14 consecutive days in order to proceed toward a Production Release. Unfortunately, since Closed Testing opened two months ago, WOZNIAC-1 has consistently fallen short of this threshold, with fewer than half the required number of testers enrolled since early May.

The iOS/macOS UI overhaul introduced at WWDC25 on June 9 presents new challenges for implementing a consistent and elegant user interface, leading me to focus efforts on preserving usability for iOS/macOS 26.

Thank you to everyone who participated and shared feedback—your input has been genuinely appreciated. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out or reply here.

Hi Tim,this is really sad

Hi Tim,

this is really sad news.

As a Betatester I can say that I am truly sorry that your project did not get the interest and attention it deserved.

Good luck with your other projects and thank you for the time you spent on this project.

I wish you all the best!  :-)

Sorry to hear this. I've moved fully to F-Droid and GrapheneOS, or I would have offered to test.

I am sorry to hear but

I am sorry to hear but actually I do not know what I should do with an Apple 1 simulator on my phone.

I don't have an adroid tablet what seems to make more sense to me at least when it can make use of an external keyboard.

What about using an alternative store like F-Droid? or selling sharing the APK directly.

Just to clarify…

WOZNIAC-1 is not limited to phones, but works with any device form factor supported by the OS, including tablets and laptops.

Also, when at a desk, it's easy to attach an external keyboard to a phone via USB-C (as well as mouse and external display), if desired. This isn't the intended use case, of course, but it is supported.

As for what you can do with it—pretty much the same thing you can do with a real Apple-1 without hardware modifications—that is, anything or nothing, depending on perspective. :)

It can run any software written for a standard Apple-1 or replica that doesn't require a peripheral in the I/O slot. You can run nearly every app ever made with a few taps/clicks.

What about using an alternative store like F-Droid? or selling sharing the APK directly.

At this time, I'm not interested in alternative app stores or direct distribution.

Thanks,

Tim

To each their own…

I'm aware of this one and it's a decent emulator for compatibility testing. If it suits your needs, that's fine. However, my goal with WOZNIAC-1 has been to set expectations much higher, and provide a significantly better experience in terms of usability and performance.

Does the Android version work

Does the Android version work on the Windows 11 Subsystem for Android? How else can you use the mobile App on a Desktop?

Interesting question…

The Android version (which should still be freely available with promo code through the closed testing program, though I haven't done any further work on it since June) would be expected to run on any Android OS device that supports the Google Play Store. This includes laptops like the Chromebook and Android desktops (like a mini-PC or tablet in "desktop mode").

I'm not really familiar with WSA (I understand that it is discontinued), but it sounds like the Google Play store requirement would effectively exclude it, at least without unsupported workarounds.

The core of the emulator is portable C++ that would easily build for Windows, but most of the value-added functionality is in the native UI and, as a Unix/Mac guy, I just haven't been interested in going there. I mostly left Windows behind many years ago. A macOS-specific version would be more likely, and is something that I actually have for development purposes, but haven't planned to release since the iOS version works nearly as well on Apple Silicon Macs.
