My Taco is for sale on eBay

I decided to sale it - the hardware thweaking days and excitement is over for me. May be it will be helpful for tweaking or as somebody else's little project. I'll throw in additional beige G3 logic board as well.

Local pickup will be available from London or Hampshire (Fleet).

Wow.. you're really poised to

Wow.. you're really poised to sell at a loss, aren't you? Is there any way you could be convinced to ship outside of the UK?

Not at a loss - but this lot

Not at a loss - but this lot does not seem to cost much these days. I will send it abroad but I have no trust in couriers and I imagine this is going to be costly.

I'll amend the auction accordingly so people can contact me about shipping costs to their country.

I amended the auction slightly - it's now for longer period and allows international buyers.

Who, ironically and embarasingly, came up with the idea for Taco, but never got his own Taco working reliably. Sad

Mainly a problem with the signals from the LCD controller to the LCD. As old threads show, it did work on and off. The annoying thing is what I paid for the LCD and LCD controller plus shipping to the UK and VAT on import - a figure I can't bear to admit to!

If anyone would like the LCD and controller to try it for themselves, I'm open to very low offers, plus shipping, of course.

I'm JEALOUS!

... But I'm also in the U.S. I'd gladly have paid the BIN price, but shipping would have nearly doubled my cost.

So congrats to you, Stuart, on your great new acquisition.

BTW, can anyone comment on noise of a Taco compared to a Takky? I'd guess that without a whining CRT, and with newer vintage PSU, HD and fan, a Taco would be considerably quieter. Just curious.

I never got to the LCD part,

I never got to the LCD part, but when I attempted a Taco it was nearly silent.

And the sad thing is that now, thanks to car-'puters being all the rage, an 8" SVGA LCD with VGA input can be had for the cost of a controller/inverter kit which doesn't work (been there, done that...).

Taco PSU noise

It all depends on the PSU, of course. Alexei's is much quieter than the usual CC, and hence the Takky. He installed it at the very bottom rear of the case, so the PSU fan expels air through the large 2" x 9" aperture usually used to slide the l/b in and out. So no grilles (apart from the PSU's own) to cause wind noise.

What sort of price are we talking about? $300US? $200US?

I'm just curious - if an 8", non-widescreen VGA LCD could be had for less than, say $200, then one could make a kind of Taco with very little effort - and rear-oriented ports - by sticking the LCD and a Mac mini inside a CC case, for a total cost of less than $700.

A lot of money, for sure, but given the real cost in time and money of making a Taco - along with the Mac mini's far superior specs - it would be appealling for many hackers.

It usually costs around $300

It usually costs around $300 I think.

A mini (or cube) can be put inside of a CC without an LCD, saving you $300. You could even get SVGA for the low cost of a MCD (M1212) monitor. Unless the point is to have an LCD which would look crisper and be easier on the eyes, which is a perfectly excellent reason.

All reasonable points about keeping a CRT. However, how does one get SVGA with an MCD? I put an MCD analog board in a CC once, hooked to the CC's CRT, and ran it off a 6360 mobo (using the 6360's included monitor port thingie). AFAIK the MCD is fixed-frequency, 640x480. Is it just a matter of using the right DB15-VGA adapter to make it multisync? Are the MCD analog board and video board capable of doing SVGA?
