132mb RAM in Mystic

I have read in a few places (here and on the color classic faq) that a 575 Logic board can't address 128mb Simms because they're not single banked. But I just ordered a 128mb Simm from 18004memory.com and installed it in my Mystic and have a total of 132mb. Just thought I'd share.

Here is what I ordered:

Now I'm off to test the difference between 20mb and 132mb...

I bought one the other day. Still waiting for it.
I'll post my results when it comes in.

that darn RAM

Hey,

Don't be so sure it's working just because it shows up in "about this Mac." Addressing means actually using. It's very similar to having 32MB in an SE/30 that isn't running 32-bit clean. It shows up but you ain't using it.

I'm pretty sure it is addressing all the RAM

I justed opened and used 12 Applications at once (iCab, Photoshop, Bolo, Sim City 2000, Claris (Emailer, Works, Organizer and Homepage) Write Now!, MpegDec (MP3 Player), Hotline, and Carracho) and had only 2mb of unused RAM.

Sure it was a little slow using each one with 11 other apps open but MpegDec didn't even skip - something it used to do when I had just one other app open.

Macbench shows big improvements in disk and graphics scores.

So all of this is kind of pointless, but neat to me nonetheless.

common knowledge?

I thought it was common knowledge that these logic boards could fully address SIMMs as large as 128MB. Anyway, that's been my experience . . .

However, this reminds me of my failure to get anything over 32MB recoginized when said logic board is driven by a PPC accelerator. My good ol' Mystic + PowerCard CC only sees 32MB, when the same setup sees all the ram when in 68K mode.

Anyone ever hear of getting more than 32MB working with a PowerCard acceled mac?

Mine too - but, I have read that RAM SIMMs larger than 32MB have to be of a certain internal configuration (single-banked) in order to be recognized by these logic boards. But perhaps all currently manufactured 64MB and 128MB SIMMs are indeed single-banked in order to ensure compatibility.

However, this reminds me of my failure to get anything over 32MB recoginized when said logic board is driven by a PPC accelerator. My good ol' Mystic + PowerCard CC only sees 32MB, when the same setup sees all the ram when in 68K mode.

Same here - my PowerMystic only registers 36MB (32MB plus 4MB soldered on the mobo) when the PPC card is enabled. It's supposed to be a limitation in the ROM on the PPC card, and therefore, I presume, there's no way to overcome it.

But who knows? Maybe someone could figure out a solution.

Memory Mojo

Howdy,

I ordered the 128MB module from 18004Memory.com (the same mentioned in the FAQ) and it works like a charm for me. What I've found out is that the Mystic Board can use dual-banked memory (can't tell it it *can* see anything higher than 128 MB - there are 256MB EDO modules around but they're scarse and rather expensive -- not to mention HUGE), if you use dual banked it's got to be a certain refresh rate, though. I've converted my Mystic in to a Show-and-Tell Takky which has two memory slots. The outer slot can address the 128MB module same as on the Mystic (hence can use dual banked memory), the second one though can only use single-banked ones.
