Mac OS X Tiger for x86 Intel - Leaked Rumors Dispelled - and more....

Hello everyone!

I am writing to you all to dispell some rumor and information floating around about Mac OS X Tiger for x86 Intel platforms being leaked on the internet.

First off, I was one of the developers that attended the conference. I received my developers kit yesterday and have had at it since I opened the package.

1) The kit has NOT been leaked to the internet - at least not as of today (6/18/05). Anyone who has been boasting that they have it have been lying through their teeth or posting grand Photoshop desktop shots. Up until yesterday I have searched EVERY IRC pirate channel, newsgroup, torrent sites, and P2P app that I could find. YES There are some that say they have it, but they are hoaxes and junk. I cannot say that it will not happen, as I am sure someone will put themselves at risk by uploading the x86 discs / DVD up on the internet. I will tell you all, I will NOT be one of them, so do not even waste your time asking.

2) The kit will NOT run on AMD based systems - I dumped it on my AMD system for giggles and got nothing but errors, instability, and crashes.

3) The Intel kit will work on Intel hardware only, and has support for nVidia and ATI cards. As for network, unless it is an Intel network port, it will not work. USB Keyboard and mouse are required, and you have to use the native OS X drivers for the mouse and keyboard, you cannot install the support software at all - obviously they are not written to work on Intel architecture. Printers, scanners, and other devices of the such do not work; so basically you need a 100% Intel board with the onboard Intel graphics or an nVidia or ATI card and you have a running unit. Anything else causes severe slowness, system instability, or it just won't plain work at all. I am sure someone will post a 'hacked' version eventually, so all you folks out there hoping to score a copy that will work with everything, do not get your hopes up for while.

4) Steve Jobs has already publically stated that the current plan is that the Intel hardware will contain an encrypted chip that will only allow the OS to run on Mac Intel hardware. The OS would have to sustain major hacking to get around this software security. I also read a post out there from some bozo claiming he wrote a BIOS bootloder to fool the OS into thinking it was an Intel BIOS - full of $h** he is. First off he doesn't have it to do that to, and second of all, you can't fool this build Smile At least no one knows how to yet.

Just thought this might help everyone - feel free to spread this post to other boards.

Sardopsycho.

Hey, thanks for sharing your expereinces with us. I'm thinking the reason that it's not compatable with AMD is because of the chipset drivers and not because of the processor. How's the speed of the dev kit?

tell us about the hardware - pretty please???

Very cool to hear of your experiences so far. Can you give us any details about the logic board? How about some pics maybe?

Speed rocks on pure intel har

Speed rocks on pure intel hardware. P4 3.2 1 gig of RAM and 250 gigs of HDD...instant reactions - no delays. As for the AMD - when I tested it it ran slow as mollasses - no driver attemtps. But then again, AMD boards use alot of VIA chipset drivers which could have affected performance, but from what I am have read and seen, it seems that the general concenus is the architecture of the processor differs heavily from the P4 series - which is where the isues lie.

As for the question about the "logic board" can you please be more specific? As in, are you referring to the system specs I am running it on? As for screenshots, as soon as I am done playing and making sure everything is running stable, I would be more than happy to post some screenshots - that isn;t against policy. However - not like it's going to be anything you haven't seen before - it's literally Mac OS X Tiger running on an Intel box. Graphically, GUI, and system are all virtually identical to what's out there, it's just Mac OS X Tiger reengineered to an Intel architecture heh. So not like it is going to be anything special like screenshots of Longhorn LOL (BLAH!)

devkit includes hardware, yes?

Logic board = mother board. You are running this on the Apple-supplied hardware? So what's on that logic board, what's the chipset? Details, details!

thanks!

I call BS

I think we have BS. I find it hard to believe a developer (or anybody familiar with computers) wouldn't know what a logic board is.

I think you might be right. The dev kits are 3.6 GHz.

Well you have to excuse me -

Well you have to excuse me - no BS here. Most people up around my way call them "motherboards". It's rare I hear the words "logic board" so I did not associate. My intel box is using the D925XBC from Intel with a 3.2 GHz Intel P4 processor. It is using the 925x chipset. So far I have had no issues running it. I did notice an occassional "drop-out" using my network connection. I am not sure whether that is attributed to the fact that the board has a Gigabit network interface...or if it is just my Linksys router playing up - it's happened before, so I wouldn't be surprised that is all it is.

In your first post you say that it will not run on AMD, now you say that it just runs very slowly. Could you explain exactly what happens when you attempt to run it on hardware with an AMD processor?

devkit without hardware?? Please tell us more!!

Since the only devkit of which I'm aware includes a MacIntel box (for US$999), can you tell us about the devkit you got which doesn't include a MacIntel box? And its cost? And how and where you got it? And how and where I (as an ADC member) can get the same?

As an Apple developer, of course sardopsycho knows Apple has always used the terminology logic board and never motherboard.

Reasons for faking it.

So is this guy (?) a regular visitor to the site who made up a new account to mess with us all, or is he (?) a corporate FUD dispenser. My money is on Disinformation for Money. I REALLY wish I could get a job like that. I'm pretty good at it for free (a recent submission I made to slashdot regarding an obviously fake danaquarium story is now making the rounds in ALL the Mac news sites) but I'd like to take it pro. I'm just not making enough money running a consulting firm. These people get paid pretty well I hear. Oh, and yeah...Chances are a developer WOULD be pretty restricted from listing chipsets in a dev kit without apple and intel's express permission (haven't seen any apple sponsored pics) given that knowledge of the chipsets involved would make someone who wanted to use a hacked copy's job
easier. This reminds me of that hilarious picture I saw a few days after the WWDC where someone had thrown an Intel mobo into a G5 case and said it was shots of the developer kit.

It's amazing what google can find. The dude works at Best Buy!!!!
Too funny. Never mind being a corporate shill, he's not even a real tech! He just plays one in a retail store.

First off...USED to work at...

First off...USED to work at Best Buy...got a better job. Secondly...I find it very rude and intolerable that someone tries to share a little good info with some folks to try to be helpful. It's obviously not welcome. I get bashed, accused of disinformation, and even sillier, get accused of being some regular to this board creating a new account to pretend to be someone else. Man, just because someone is a n00b and they get an ass raping just for trying to be helpful for something he is new at; not to mention having the balls and cockyness to actually look up personal info and bash my former job - who is the asshole here? ...nevermind. Thanks for being so open and polite much appreciated. Have a good one guys. Not coming back here again...

Goodbye, then. I'm sorry that you don't want to stay any longer, but your story seems, well, highly improbable.

unhelpful attitiude

It's a shame some of us here at AF feel the need to challenge others on their experiences. That kind of attitude is not very helpful, and not at all friendly.

I've taken the position that this poster is for real and am very interested in hearing about their experiences running X-on-Intel. While in the end they may turn out to be spoofing us, I think there's a damn good chance they are not and now having chased them away we may never know.

re: unhelpful attitude

I find it hard to believe that if the guy were real he would walk away from the board just because I spent 3 seconds on google. Generally, when liars get caught they get defensive and try to make the people who catch them feel guilty. The guy registered under sardopsycho elsewhere in a public forum, and posted his name and home address. This does not show a high degree of internet savvy. He didn't know what a logic board was. He had the wrong specs for the dev machines, he never posted pictures. He never answered the challenge of proof. I worked for years with psychologically unstable people and I've got a nose for BS because of that experience. He was faking it, lots of people do, he just didn't have the chops to be able to pull it off. He was feeding in on people's hunger for information, giving little to no actual data, just conflicting information and then restating his position. We heard nothing of how he was employed as a developer, nothing of the truth. He ran away as soon as his lie was uncovered, my only regret is figuring it out before we could understand his ultimate motivation for doing so.

Look...

Logic board = damn close to an Apple trademark. Of course he would have known what that meant.

He contradicts himself a few times, and offers no proof of actually owning the dev kit. He almost doesn't seem to know what it is.

I don't know or care who he was, all I'm saying is that when you look at it closely, his story doesn't add up. His use of the word "n00b" makes him look like just another pseudo-geek.

Enough

It doesn't matter whether he was lying or not...he's gone now, so stop beating a dead horse.

But the next person to attack another member of AF in the forums is going to have a little talk with me.

Maybe not a developer . . .

but very good chance he was running the real deal.

I'm not a apologist for this guy but I think it very possible he had access to the devkit's media and had installed it on an Intel-based PC. And if that's not interesting to youz guyz then I don't know what is!

I for one would very much like to have discovered the truth rather than have borked the guy off into the ether! How about a little subtlety next time, eh folks?

The same google search turned up his name in iexbeta.com apple forum with WORD FOR WORD the exact same posts, registering the same day, only he was called out by an admin who was actually a developer and he never posted again. The guy was just trying to spread a lie. I apologize for not stringing him along, but it does no one good to continue the lies.
