Darwin bsd

g'day from down under
i am having problems with my clamshell it has os x 10.3.9 and one night i restarted the machine and i was greeted with black screen saying "darwin/bsd (localhost) (console)" and under that it says "Login" and when i type in my username and press enter it goes down and says "password" and when i try and type my pw it wont let me but i can press enter but then it says "login Failed" and then it looks like it is logining in the blue screen comes up the little loading picture comes up but then it goes back to the black screen and says "Darwin/bsd (Blade-Avenger-2.local) (console)" and the same thing happens with the logining in process. So i tryed changing the admin pw with the ctr s fsck thing i found on the forums and that didnt work so if someone can help me it would be much apresiated.

Your Clamshell

Gidday...We Aussies must stick together, so I hope I can be of assistance here.
Can you try pressing the Shift key during startup, as this will (or should) start you in 'Safe Boot' mode, temporarily disabling login items and non-essential kernel files..... just a thought

Did That work? In other words, can you access your desktop?
If not, take a look at the Recent post 'G4 Laptop Password' and read my 2 cents worth of advice that I submitted for another fellow FritterCritter.

ummm... there is no such thin

ummm... there is no such thing as a safe mode but you can try putting your 10.x.x installation CD inside the computer and press and hold the C button after you press the power button.

That will get the machine to hopefully boot the installer. If you just got the machine you could perhaps do a clean reinstall?

ummm... there is no such thing as a safe mode

Ummm... yes there is! If you hold down shift on startup it disables all non essential system/kernel extensions and login items... just like in OS 9.

That's called extensions off!

In OS 9 that's what it was called. In OS X it's called Safe Boot mode:

Use "Singler User Mode"

If you are having problems with your password, then you need to boot into single user mode- hold down command-s while you boot the computer. Then, type in:
login
root
If that doesn’t work, try this:
cd /var/db/shadow/hash
ls -a
vi (name of what looks like password file from the list that resulted), and change it.

If that doesn’t work, you will need to boot from an OS 9 CD. This will give you root access to all your files. Find your password file ( in /var/db/shadow/hash/) and change it.

it was simple in my case

I had the exact same problem. Nothing I did helped. I turned the Mac off, unplugged the network cable, and turned it back on. It booted normally. Then I plugged back in the cable.
