ok, this has probably been done to death, but i cant locate any threads onm this.
i have a G3AIO and installed osx.3 several days ago with a cd-rw drive (lite-on, which seems to not work anymore) and the 3CD upgrade set from a fresh install of x.1.4. now i want to put a dvd drive in. will the drive be recognized right away as a dvd drive? and to get all the dvd stuff to watch movies, how do i get that. i do have a a x.3 dvd full install. but i have already updated the x.3 all the way to x.3.7. is this a big problem? because it took almost four hours just for a good install to finally happen on my aio. not to mention the 7 other hours full of bad installs. the dvd will probably be an apple combo drive if it still remains at this guys house. god, i hads a chance to a dvd drive awhile ago and said no to it. i should've taken it. oh well.
do i have to install all over again? or is there an add-on thing in the install-dvd?

The dvd drive I have in mine was picked up right away in not only OS X, but also in OS 9. It is an LG DVD-Rom. But seeing as it is IDE, any drive should be picked up for reading without drivers. As far as DVD Viewing, you will have to consider either a new video card and/or a faster CPU. And only then you will have to use VideoLan Client, or another Software DVD Player Application. I happen to be using XinePlayer, which is a port from Linux. But even then, it requires 10.3 and later (with the x.3.9 combo update)

As far as OS 9, the only way you can go is to upgrade the Video Card, and then you *might* be able to do a video hack for the internal Screen. I suggest if you do the OS X route with a New CPU, that you do the VRAM Upgrade to 6MBs
I tried this with a random DVD drive and my beige G3 and it was picked up by the OS with no probs.
If your considering DVD playing then I'd say that Apple's DVD Player app is the fastest out there. You'll need Pacifist (http://www.charlessoft.com/) in order to insat;ll the app from the shystem tome viewer. In OS 9 unfortuanatly you'll need on of those fancy ATI cards that came with some B&Ws…

Apple's DVD player requires at least 8MB VRAM, whereas the G3's max at 6

plus i just got the x.3.9 update. wich will load tonite. didnt do it before because the combo dmg file from apple was always corrupted. but i got a good x.3.8 and x.3.9. checked them out at work to see if they werent corrupted.

press and hold command-option-o-f at start sound
then type
