ok, so i got a vst fdusb-m real cheap. now everywhere i was reading said that osx didnt need drivers. i understand.
but i read in the online manual thaT even the usb keyboard doesnt supply enough power to the usb drive. now this leads me to beleive that a pci card might not have enough juice either. because i just got it, and i cant get the disk to show up. it is starting to get really cold in charlotte (not too cold compared to other places) but the mail was cold and so was the drive. so i let it warm thinking that might help.
so let me know if i just need to shell out the bucks to get a powered usb hub. unless someone has one they want to donate or trade.

yea that is your problem the usb pci card isnt supplying enuff power you do need a powered usb hub before it works.
ok, i took the vst to work, and plug into one of the g4's. the g4 had been on all night because of printing...plugged into keyboard first, just to try and see. an error about not enough power. cool. it goes that far. plugged into booty usb, and the light came on just like it did with pci card. put a disk in and then a bunch o' monkey shine. spinning vrrt'ing clicking and such. just like the pci card. this freaked me out a bit. so i rebooted, with the floppy still plugged. the hd did its noises l;onger than usual but i put a floppy in and the spinning was down to minimal and the icon popped up on the screen. i then transfered data and used disk utility to reformat. all a success.
now to get it home. i am thinking that the pci might have had enough juice. you say it didnt, but all the same things happened between the built-in usb and the pci usb. what i didnt do at home is leave it plugged in and then reboot. i think it is worth a try. but i will still look for a powered hub.

ps, the thing is a lot noisier than i had imagined.
ive read on diffrent forums that some pci us cards or usb/firewire cards dont suply enuf power to use the device that is plugged in the beige and read that a powered usb hub was needed
Ive used a usb floppy on a pci card and it worked fine.
are you on a Beige G3
yes, i am on a biege (if i forgot to mention). g3aio.
like i said. took it home, changed all the internal wires though. i had been planning on doing that because i have a second hd placed in the old floppy slot. put in new 36" ide cables. two fans to help keep the g4 zif cooler. and tonight the whole machine seems to be running a lot smoother. could just be the placebo effect.
but the usb floppy, put the machine together and plugged the floppy in. then i pushed the go button. guess what. my opti usb card supplies enough juice. it was just as slow as it was when plugged nto the builtin usb on a digital audio g4. so i am satisfied.

you dont have a ATI radion 7000 installed either at least i dont think you do. most problems ive seen was because of the 2 cards fighting over somthing
my powrebook g3 can't read disks from my expantion bay maybe g3s with
max os x don't like foppys
there are no drivers in OS X for expansion bay floppies either. IIRC, they use the same connection as seen in the regular Desktops (Controller wise)
well there sorta is drivers for OS X for the floppy. but its sorta hit and miss getting it to work
ftp://ftp.mklinux.org/pub/darwin/floppy
couldn't get it to work on my AIO though...
I got it to work under 10.1 on my dad's beige, but the update to 10.3 killed it
I'm not too bothered, it was too slow to be properly useable and we only used floppies for a kinda backup.
moros
Is there a need to such long cables? You'll likely get fewer erros and maybe a tad better performance if you stay with the 18" spec for ATA cables. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Technology_Attachment
