Change of airport cards
Hey folks i happen to have an older Airport the Snow version with the "b" card installed, now does anyone know if i could replace the airport card from that to a extreme card, of course i'd have to write some type of a firmware for it to accept the card but does anyone think this could be done...might be a cheap upgrade instead of a full out new airport extreme ??
the cards are completly different ... so there is no real way to do it ... the Airport card is a modified PCMCIA card ... while the A.E. card is a Mini-PCI card ... which are completly different sizes and shapes ... and anyway the PCMCIA bus dosent have enough bandwidth to allow A.E. to work at full speed anyway ... so there is no way of doing it ...

awww...well that blows that idea away...probably on purpose tho too !
so then one more question...the airport card that is in the base station which is only a B version card..would that work in my pcmcia card slot of my G4 17" beast ? just curious because the airport extreme doesnt not allow passive scanning of packets yet and i dont really wanna buy a new pcmcia card just for wifi. the old apple airport cards do tho ... could i just plug that card into the pcmcia card slot...and would i need a specail driver for it to reconize it or am i going to run into some problems with 2 wifi cards installed
nope ... sorry ... although the card is PCMCIA it isnt pin compatable with a PCMCIA slot ... apple switched a couple of pins to stop people putting cheapo 3rd party WiFi cards in their iMacs/iBooks
TOM
welll grrrrr to them...hahaha i guess its off to buy a cheapo wifi card then
thanks a bunch Tom
IIRC, that's not right. If I'm not mistaken, the card that's inside the base station is a Wavelan PCMCIA card, not an Airport card. Lemme check...
Yeah, it is a Wavelan card. Here's a take-apart guide that show's a pic of it. That should plug in and Just Work (TM).
That's the "Graphite" base station. The "Snow" unit is completely different inside.

Well, you learn something new every day. Does it have a standard Airport card in the Snow BS, then?
Yes. I haven't had the chance to take apart one of the extreme ones yet, but to guess it will have an airport extreme pci card in it.
