All Sorts of Science Fiction

I love all sorts of science fiction. I really enjoy Star Trek, especially when its a new episode, and it's one of the only things that I will turn on a TV for anymore. I also really love reading the stuff (Science Fiction in general). Any good SF on TV is better than most other stuff out there. Noteable stuff: Outer Limits, Babylon 5, Buffy, Firefly. Note that none of these are in production anymore.

youbetcha!

I have seen every episode from the original series, all but 1 or 2 from TNG, all from DS9, all but 1 of Voyager, and all but 1 of Enterprise. Not really into the books, games, or conventions. But I schedule my activities around when the new episodes are one. The wife learned long ago to wait for the commercial during the 'special time'. The kids (5 and 3) both know who Archer and T'Pol are.

The original series

Boy, that was a great show. The movies based on it weren't that bad either.

DS9 was the best. TNG was good, but DS9 was deeper. Don't get me started on Voyager or Enterprise, or the last three Trek movies.

agreed...

Voyager was good, and I think Enterprise is edgy and raw, and inconsistencies can always be chalked up to the whole tempral thing they have going on, but DS9 was the best and it tied up ALL of the loose ends they created throughout the whole series. I do not buy tapes and DVDs of TV shows, but almost made the exception here. The writers had a vision in mind when the drafted the pilot and thanks go to whomever allowed them to carry it through to the end. So many people thought a none-ship based story would fail, but it was the best angle yet!

Why DS9 did so well is becaus

Why DS9 did so well is because Rick Berman had his hands full with TNG and then Voyager. Michael Piller et al were running the show, and they actually knew what they were doing. Berman's been nothing but bad news for the Trek franchise.

The gf and I were watching Nemesis a couple months back. She made the comment that it really reminded her of a video game. So we skipped back to the beginning and watched it over, talking it out. We agreed, every scene seemed to be put together so that you could play it in a game.

I stopped watching Enterprise when I got out of school. It's just not as good when you aren't thinking "Ok, I'm avoiding homework now." I used to remember to watch it every week. Now I'll only see it if I catch part of it before I run off somewhere. And between DVD's and books, I tend not to spend a lot of time watching TV.

On the other hand, I tend to watch TV from a differant perspective from most. I'm a New Media major (as of sept.) and love working with films. This tends to mean that I watch an episode of something and think about filming techniques more than story or character development. But Enterprise definantly shows that you need to have more than a decent budget to make a good show. Personally, I prefer TV where theres a mix of decent (not necesarily great) effects, good plot and characterization, as well as really unusually done filming.

I also prefer a continuing story arc, but thats a whole other thread.

If you wanted to be stupid...

...you could have a Klingon and a human sharing an appartment, like the Odd Couple.

One thing that really turns m

One thing that really turns me off od Enterprise is the dang theme song. Just the song alone is enough to make me flip the channel. It's just not a Trek song, period.

That, and the series has almost completely destroyed the continuity established by the original series, unless you accept that this is some 'alternate timeline': the equivalent of Dynasty (or was it Dallas?) turning an entire season into an "it was all a dream" sequence.

And the NX-01 Enterprise herself: a nice ship on its own, but to accept that it pre-dates the TOS Enterprise, when it's basically a re-painted TNG Akira-class ship...no thanks. I won't watch this series

I love the original show. Taken in the context of when it was released, it was wonderful, and broke a lot of new ground for television. The Enterprise is a thing of beauty, and the ideals of the original are, to me, superior to the contradictions of TNG (an example of this is the constant TNG reminders of how earth has solved all its problems and become a sort of utopia, but we are constantly presented with 'fleet admirals and commodores that are nuts, megalomaniacs, possessed, or all of the above).

There were some really kick-@ss episodes of TNG...The Inner Light, Darmok, Best of Both Worlds I & II. And a few real stinkers, but even B5 had a few of those. Wink

Get rid of Berman and Braga, and I'm sure the franchise would be able to regain some of the creativity it's lost since late-TNG.

And along those lines...latest rumour is J. Michael Straczynski of Babylon 5 fame has been brought on as a producer for an as-yet unannounced Trek spinoff in development. :o

...and using that as a segue into a slightly off-topic note, Straczynski is working on pre-production work of a Babylon 5 theatrical movie (as opposed to the made-for-TV ones we've had so far), tentatively titled The Memory of Shadows. :o

Oh yeah...this is what I thought the NX-01 should have looked like...

the song was better on the first season, it is just not right with the vocal ensemble in the background.

Why would one be ashamed of it? So it's basically a geeky soap opera... who cares? They play with really cool toys! Biggrin

Ba'Joran nose

Had a lab partner in college.

He dressed up in a TNG starfleet uniform and wore a Ba'Joran (sp?) nose for halloween and a few other random occassions.

Yes, we were all Physics majors. Yes we had frequent debates over principles of relativity and the problems ignored in TNG.

TNG Rules

Personally, TNG is my favourite, and I can't say much about DS9, but the few episodes I've caught on SpikeTV (Including Past Tense) are amazing. The books I read from my local library (from TNG Academy, DS9 and Voyager) are catchy and almost better than the TV episodes. I only wish I could get just a copy of All Good Things... (the episode)

Jeri Ryan -- Seven of Nine

Her ex-husband was running for a U.S. Senate seat (being vacated by Sen. Peter Fitzgerald, R-Ill) here in Illinois. He had a good chance of winning...until some of the details of his divorce hearing from Jeri became public.

So the democrats will pick-up one seat in the U.S. Senate.

Just that one time?

Without going too much off-topic...there seems to be greater reaction to the speed with which the state Republican party severed it's ties with Ryan than to the indiscretions revealed in the divorce records.

Trekkie Here!!

Im a trekkie I will admit it, in high school i had plans laid out to build a starfleet shuttlecraft out of a van and drive it around. I have boxes and boxes of star trek stuff ranging from models to uniforms, i got toys, at one point i had memorized all the episode names of the original 79

Raven, what kind of van were

Raven, what kind of van were you gonna turn into a shuttle? I've had the same idea, just no $, thinking of using a Chevy Lumina and making it look like a shuttle from TNG. they look like shuttles already.

Toyota

Someone around here (CT) had a Toyota van like this that they repainted and added decals to to make it look like a shuttle. It sure caught me by surprise just driving along past me...
