What to do with two AIOs?!

Hey there!

I have two beige AIO computers and I have NO IDEA what to do with them. I think it would be interesting to maybe put a WiFi card in them, and do something other tinkering with them, but I don't know what the best course of action would be.

What would you guys do with these? Any interesting projects you have in mind?

Which AIOs?

The term can be applied to many Macs, from the extremes of compact AIOs (Classics in the generic sense) to the G3 'Molar', which have greatly varied capacities.

Sorry, I meant beige *G3* AIO

Sorry, I meant beige *G3* AIOs... I guess I'm used to calling these systems by that name, and any other little all-in-one by its proper name. Smile

There are many threads here about upgrading beige G3s and AIOs - rather than going through it all again, do a Google search with site:applefritter.com after your keywords. The search function built in to this site is pretty useless.

All the beige G3s use the same motherboard, so anything that applies to the Desktop and Tower also applies to the AIO. There are a couple of additional hacks for the AIO to do with the video. Good luck, and keep us posted!

I know all about the ways to upgrade them... minus the video hack, which I don't know anything about...

I was just wondering if you guys knew of any creative uses for them once they were upgraded.

The important thing is what do you want it to do?

There's tons of uses for a beige G3/AIO. One thing I was considering, was getting BTV Pro and setting up one of my beige towers by a window and connecting a video feed to do some stop-motion sunsets.

There's a server version of Ubuntu PPC, and using a combination of the Mac and i386 guides, you could set up a server...though with an AIO it'll never be headless ;). Write-ups for server-only PPC linuxusus seem very rare, so you'd get a lot of geek-cred for the accomplishment.

Old world...

Ubuntu isnt that hard to do on an Old World machine. You just need OS 9 and a bootloader. It takes some know how, and a weekend Wink

If you cant think of anything to do with it, Get Ubuntu PPC Server running on it, and use it as a web server.

Well, I don't know if I want

Well, I don't know if I want to tinker with Ubuntu on it at this point, since I am pretty happy with OS X. I used Ubuntu on a Dell once... I didn't like it too much. Smile I think at this point, I will just sell them or give them away to friends who would want to use them!

Otherwise, does anyone know a link for that hack that allows a PCI video card's processing power to be used on the internal display?
