They skipped my favorite feat

They skipped my favorite feature of FF2, opening with windows and tabs from the previous session. I find it nearly indispensable now. I generally have 6-7 tabs open in FF at a time to sites I frequent daily. more as I look at various things. It's great to not have to lose a thread of reading to logout or restart the system. I think maintaining windows/tabs over multiple sessions is about as great of a feature as tabs. Apple can't leave it out. They just can't, it's the #1 reason Safari is not my browser of choice.

Running Safari 3 on my G5 now

And actually kind of excited to try out Safari on my Basement PC. *Any* alternative to M$ Internet Exploder is welcome in my opinion.

Hopefully this will increase Safari's presence both on the Mac side and the Windows side. And more Safari presence might mean fewer "IE only" sites in the future.

Installed it on my main PC. Seems peppy enough, though I haven't noticed a speed difference between Safari and Firefox so far.

Importing my bookmarks file from FF was briefly confusing. The imported bookmarks don't show up under the bookmarks menu. Thinking I'd mis-clicked, I imported them again. I had to go to the Show All Bookmarks menu, and there they were: twice. once I figured that out, it was no different than any other browser to organize and drag my imports into the appropriate areas.

I forget. Why would anyone prefer Safari over Firefox? Safari has never impressed me enough to want to use it. Speed? How much faster could it possibly be?

Oh, and, happy Kamehameha Day.

I don't like safari at all co

I don't like safari at all compared to FF2. Most of the time pages I visit on myspace would cause a spinning color wheel in safari forever, but wouldn't do a thing in FF2. Another cool thing I like about FF2 as Im writing this now it has a built in spell check.

My Take on It

I'm thinking Firefox FTW too, but it's cool for the sheer novelty of it.

This was posted in Safari, on Win2K Pro. Not XP or Vista.

Funny, eh? If they offically stated it runs on Win2K, then you'd have:

Microsoft: "No IE7 for Win2000."
Apple: "Safari, from OS X, on Win2000."

Re: My Take on It

my take...
What is the advantage of Apple doing this? Where is their insentive?
It annoys Microsoft. That's all they're doing. This is why there is no linux version of iTunes or Safari, as releasing versions for linux would be academic. Trouble is with linux versions... there's no one to annoy.

I think Apple's reasoning beh

I think Apple's reasoning behind releasing Safari is to allow more people to develop (and test) web-based applications for the iPhone. (which is a cop-out solution if I've ever heard one, but nobody asked me)

Re: I think Apple's reasoning beh

I think they just threw developers a bone today. Apple already showed they don't even want developers for the iPhone. So they threw a bone out to allow third party development of web apps. They don't want to alianate developers again, but the tone is that they don't really need developers.

keynote

anyone notice there was no mention of zfs? The holy grail of filesystems... and Steve doesn't even hint at it. weird. I guess he doesn't want people talking about Sun? Or maybe they haven't committed to it yet... but I find it hard to believe they wouldn't delay until zfs works, just to have one more thing over M$, along with 64-bit end2end

I know the design I was fleshing out for an iPhone app has been tossed out.

(Edit: I'd elaborate on it, but it still has potential as a Mac app. It's potential is greatly diminished if it can't be run on the iPhone without calling it up in a browser though.)

Friend gave me another good reason for Windows Safari... every time someone searches on Google with Safari, Google pays Apple.

I still think that it resembles col-o-nel Homestar done up in grayscale and some fuzzyness. And it doesn't show up in FF2, but it does in Safari...

I just want to say that safar

I just want to say that safari 3 WILL run on Windows 2000. Despite them saying Xp or vista, just download the one for XP and install.

I am going to see how well it runs on a 166mhz pentium I.

damn the system requirements, full speed ahead.

oh, I LOVE the new search. it's integrated like FF, but much faster. and it highlights better. the new moveable tabs, the closing warning for open tabs, and the closing warning for typed text. this is sweet.

edit: nope. did not work. got as far as building part of the UI, then crashed. here's a pic:

For whatever reason, I've nev

For whatever reason, I've never been fond of firefox. As for Safari 3, it runs horribly on my work issued 1.67 ghz PBG4. I haven't tried it on my iMac Core 2 Duo at work, but so far I am less than impressed. I think I'll wait this one out.

i have the beta on both my pmG5 and my dell celeron 2.4,
replaced safari 2 and ff2 and so far it seems about the same, not really any faster, but not really any slower either. i'm just using it b/c i use apple apps whenever i can. i still have ff on both computers and ie6 on the dell though, just because sometimes one site or another doesn't work

re: spellchecking

IIRC it's an OS-level service.

insentive and alianate show up underlined in text input on FF2, though not on my old v1.3.2 Safari. How about Safari v2.x?

Heh, default page on S3 windows is apple.com/startpage/, FF2 loaded it in about half the time it took S3. Blum 3

not surprised

I just want to say that safari 3 WILL run on Windows 2000.

Windows XP and Windows 2K are pretty much the same OS. XP has new a new look, but, afaik, that's it. XP = 2K + eyecandy.

hmm, it runs fine on this her

hmm, it runs fine on this here 400mhz B&W. it's nice and fast too. I have noticed a speed difference between 2.0.4 and 3.0.

well, the dell box only has 64mb of ram, so maybe that's it. but FF2 runs fine.

Re: I think Apple's reasoning beh

I think Apple's reasoning behind releasing Safari is to allow more people to develop (and test) web-based applications for the iPhone. (which is a cop-out solution if I've ever heard one, but nobody asked me)

I more or less agree, but sympathise with Apple's caution. With the iPhone, Apple are entering a new market (for them) and expectations for performance, interface and reliability are high. Potential purchasers are encouraged to expect the ease of use of an iPod, so Apple are behaving conservatively. The iPhone, initially at least, will not be able to run native applications that may affect stability or modify the user interface. Am I the only one who remembers crummy early Mac apps that ran like a DOS app in a Mac window?

Apple's crumb for potential iPhone developers is to develop a web app. Apple have said that they will publish APIs for the iPhone that can extend web apps. We can assume that the APIs will allow iPhone web apps to interact with other iPhone apps or desktop apps (address books, bookmarks, iTunes) on a connected Mac/PC. In a secure way, unlike ActiveX with Internet Exploder. Assume also that the iPhone APIs are built into Safari 3 for Mac OS X (and do not exist in other browsers). Similarly, assume that the iPhone APIs do not currently exist in FF or IE7 for Windows.

So what are Apple to do? Safari 3 for Windows is about getting a foot in the door. When you install Safari 3, you'll install all of the Safari libraries that are required for the iPhone web app. If you need to use a web app that exploits iPhone functionality on a Windows PC, use Safari 3. Of course, WebKit is open source so expect plug-ins for other Windows browsers to enable iPhone support. Apple, for obvious commercial and tech support limitation reasons, will only support Safari 3 with iPhones.

I certainly don't understand Apple's strategy for Windows PCs. Yet there is something going on about undermining Microsoft's control of the desktop. A couple of years ago, you could download iTunes on its own, but now the (default) installation comes with QuickTime. With the iPhone, we can assume that the sync package will come with a new version of iTunes and QT. Maybe Marc Andreesen was right about Windows being "A bag of drivers", but premature. Microsoft will own Windows and Office for a few more years. The rest of the PC playing field is open.

Safari has a built-in spell check for v3, and it's red underline is much brighter and more bold than in FF.
