Maybe not dead...

Check the PRAM battry in those Powermacs.
Some machines of that age demonstrate the symptoms you describe when the battery has died.
You might end up with working Powermacs. :macos:

As far as the CCs go, they have a power switch on the back near where the power cord plugs into. Make sure that is turned on (set to the | setting, not O) and connect a keyboard, press the power key on that.

Your PPCs sound like dead PRAM. The 5400, that is most likely a software problem. Find an OS 8.0 or later CD and insert it in the drive -- reboot and hold the C key until you (hopefully) get a happy Mac. Hopefully you can reformat the drive and reinstall. What happens when you click OK?

Good luck,

As far as the CCs go...

well, the CCs are up and running and i connected an external monitor to the powermac 5400 and the internal screen decided to jump up and run, and i used a boot disk and got rid of AT Ease, and i ran the extension manager, and i found that it was third party extensions. and now i have a great 5500/225 Biggrin but the screen clicks when it starts up but its only momentarily. The classics are instore for a reformat and a reinstall. I now need to find an OS 8 CD or download it from somewhere or at least 7.6. All thats left now is to get my third power mac (5200/120) up and running.

Remember

Don't want to pick on you guys, but everyone needs to remember: Mac OS 7.6, 8.1, 8.6, etc, are still copyrighted software, and traiding such software one Applefritter is a violation of applefritters AUP. Ony System 7.5.3 and some older versions (there are some that are not, *I think* 7.1 isn't but any 6 or older *should* be ok) are free. Just some food for thought.

I doubt any AUP violation could rise from actually shipping someone a CD (especially if the sender isn't using the software, which sounds likely since he's willing to ship it).

I could be wrong, and I could be right, but then again I could be just rambling at 11:30PM.

My understanding is that if the person sends the *original* CD and no longer makes use of the software on the CD on their own machines, then it is a normal transfer. Sending a copied CD or continuing to use the software if it requires you to have the original media would be in violation. I would guess that using the original CD to install the Mac OS and then sending that CD to someone else while still using that install would be fine. I don't recall any isntance of Apple putting a "Only to be distrubuted witha new Mac" label on any of their CD's ala Microsoft. IANAL...

Nope, that would definitely be a violation of your license.

I wish this freaking thing had real quoting...

Anyway. Yes, in nearly every case sending an OS CD to someone else after installing it on your own system would be a license violation. OSes are always licensed on a per-machine-install basis.

(If it were "okay" to install an OS off the CD and then pass it along, then who in their right mind would ever buy a copy? There'd be in all the world about a hundred sets of OS X Panther being passed lovingly around from user to user. I suppose given the mass you'd need a couple thousand Windows CDs, of course.)

Sticky wicket . . .

. . . software licensing is surely that, but Apple's sales of proprietary OS/CPU combinations clearly imply the license for "original equipment" OS for each CPU transfers with ownership of the machine. Therefore, in most cases, Microsoft's third party licensing setup for generic CPUs wouldn't be at all comparable.

That said, upgrades to the OS of the system are clearly proprietary, but borrowing a friend's install CD, even if that friend is still using 8.x on another machine, should be no problem if your system shipped with 8.x, as the license is not for the media being borrowed.

However, in most cases, folks seem to be trying to get "the best" OS for each particular machine, which is usually another ballgame entirely.

IMHO, of course,
jt

That's about what I was think

That's about what I was thinking of when I mentioned that install and send off thing. AFAIK, for Apple, you are legally able to return the machine to a factory state (ie. freshinstall of then-current OS) even if you don't actually buy a new copy of the OS. Other vendors like IBM and Sun and SGI explicitly say that the software rights don't transfer with the machine, and if you buy the machine used, you have to buy a new software license to use the OS on it. Sad

Where the heck do I do that now, I don't see any preference setting other than "new theme" which is a definite improvement . . .

. . . if rising to the level of lower back ugly, can be called definite, but it is an inprovement!
