Turning off an iBook G4 CD-DVD drive

Hey guys. I've got an iBook G4 with a busted CD-DVD drive, is there anyway I can keep it from booting up? It makes the most horrible sounds when it boots or comes out of hibernation and I don't have the money to replace it yet. Thanks!

Please don't cross-post threads. Especially when your other post is in the Apple I forums (which is completely unrelated to iBooks).

If your optical drive is defective, the only way to "turn it off" would be to remove it, or remove the control board from inside it. There's no switch, hardware or software, that will enable/disable power to the drive.

Same problem in by Tibook. Si

Same problem in by Tibook. Simple fix is just to disconnect the power cable to the drive. (I would have just taken it out, but the weight is needed to balance the laptop. It feels bad otherwise.)

iBook, not a TiBook

Heh, yeah but the TiBook's drive is trivial to access where the iBook's is not. Blum 3

No, sorry, I don't have a solution for the OP, other than replacing the drive.

well, the ribbon cable is kin

well, the ribbon cable is kind of accessible from there the airport card/memory slot is. It'll be to the right, just try to push it up a bit. That'll effectively disable it until your can replace it or spend the time to crack your iBook open (not something I'd advise anybody who hasn't done it before to do).

There has to be a first time for everything. Just be careful if you do do it and take your time.

Exactly. The best way is to have a good guide, and ice cube tray, and just jump right in. Theres only about 500 little tiny screws.

I maintain a "fleet" of 12 iBooks and I recently had to (nearly completely) disassemble one to get the tip of the power adapter out of the DC in board.

It really isn't that hard, and by the second or third time, its a piece of cake.

Well, it's dead simple for me

Well, it's dead simple for me. I can field strip a 12" iBook G4 in less than 10 minutes ... 15 if I have my eyes closed. Of course, I've taken apart about 1500 units multiple times (was the onsite service tech for a school district with a one to one initiative deployment of 1500 iBooks and a bunch more 15" PowerBook G4's.

It's just not something I really advocate that someone who has never cracked open a laptop before to do.
