OS 10.0 won't recognize my Pismo hard drive

I am having trouble installing 10.3 on my Pismo, I didn't realize it was an upgrade when I bought it (It is a full retail install but are ALL OS X disks upgrade only?) So I have to install 10.0, upgrade to 10.1 THEN upgrade to 10.3. The problem is 10.0 doesn't see my 'new old' 80 gig hard disk, all the others do.

My 'old old' 20 gig drive died (I am going to take it apart and use it to learn how to repair drives with mechanical problems) so I can't clone it. I think my only option is to figure a way to install a 10.1 or 10.3 upgrade on a blank drive, is there a way?

Or maybe I can try to set the jumpers differently on the new drive- it is set to master like it should be.

I really scored with this drive. I took a chance and bid on an 'untested' 80 gig 2.5" drive on ebay, got it for $11.50. Windows couldn't see it, but the OS 9.1 install disk saw it immediately when it was mounted in the Pismo and installed fine.

Just received my 80 gig FireWire hard drive also from ebay for $18.50. It is a generic Firewire case, but looks good so far. Norton is checking out the drive now as the OS X install said it couldn't set file permissions or something and quit the install and Disk First Aid says it is 'not supported'.

Well... Just now the Pismo went to sleep on me while running a Norton surface scan on the Firewire drive and won't wake up. Great. Time to just go to bed.

All OS X systems (10.0, 10.1,

All OS X systems (10.0, 10.1, 10.2, 10.3) are separate systems and you need a retail version to upgrade. To install 10.3, you don't need to install the earlier OS X versions. Is the 10.3 system installer disc black with a silver X?

You need to check if your Mac requires a firmware (Boot ROM version in System Profiler) update. Mac OS Secret Available firmware updates
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117 If an update is required, the update must be installed (using OS 9) BEFORE you install OS X.

Cheers, Tom

Unfortunately...

My 10.3 disk says 'upgrade disk' and unlike Windows where if you are installing on a bare drive you just have to enter your previous serial number, this disks says 'A previous version of OS X was not found on this volume install cannot continue' or something to that effect....

There HAS to be a way around this.

And yes, I did the firmware upgrade on my last install (my first of OS X).

Done and working!

Followed the great instructions here:
http://litpixel.com/mac/articles/UpdateCDHack/index.html

Deleted one small file "CheckForOSX", Burned it back to a CD-RW (I did it several times till I got it right) I plan on making a minimal 'rescue disk' with tools for emergencies so the CD-RW will work out well for future changes.

Note that this article is for OS X 10.1, but I was able to do it with OS X 10.3!

Now I just need to find a cheap wireless router to get it on line again (I've seen 802.11g's for $25 or so, 802.11n's for about $10 more). Any suggestions as to one that plays nice with Macs?

For the most part 802.11 is 802.11, so anything should be fine. I've used Linksys, Netgear, and Cisco all without trouble. If I had to recommend a particular cheap one I'd say go with Linksys. The WRT54G series has been around forever. And since Cisco acquired Linksys there are smarter-then-average monkeys banging on the software.

Boy talk about a goldmine of info on the WRT54G! It is all over the place about its open source firmware, for example:
http://www.wi-fiplanet.com/tutorials/article.php/3562391

But there are some caveats:

http://www.amazon.com/review/R3QO597SPGJN8K/ref=cm_cr_pr_viewpnt#R3QO597SPGJN8K

But I guess I really don't need something else to hack. Amazon sells them for $30 - $60

Thanks for the info.

I was looking at this one:
http://www.directron.com/wbr6000.html
It has a claimed outdoor range of nearly 2000 feet with the stock antennae which would be great for out here in the country. Put some big ol 'aerials' on that thang and it would reach the parents' Ranch a mile away!

This is a cheap -n switch:

Maybe this should be a new thread...

Never heard of CP Technologies though...
