Macbook Pro randomly restarting

Hey guys, (and girls too!)

I'm having a pretty strange recurring issue with my MBP. It seems that every time I'm not looking, the dang thing restarts itself. This seems to occur anytime I get up and leave for a few minutes. I come back to a login screen and realize whatever I was just working on is not gone.
It never happens when I'm actually using the computer...so I have no idea whats up.

I'm open to any ideas/suggestions.

15" MBP Core 2 Duo
2.16 gHz
1 gig RAM
120 Gig HD
OS X.4.11

Cats are tricky little buggers. Don't let their innocent appearance fool you. They can be tricky.

Could a cat really restart a computer?

Our cat not only restarted my wife's iBook: she restarted it to Open Firmware. On more than one occasion.

For those who aren't sure how to do this, you need to hold down Command-Option-O-F after restart until a black-on-grey command line screen appears. Apparently Sophie fancies herself a programmer?

Going to catch them in action!

SO does anyone know of a way to record them...and in such a way that the recording will automatically be saved when the computer is shut down?

I've tried iMovie but it will not save the recorded data.

Why don't you just sit there and watch the computer for a while.. Perhaps it isn't your cat.

Turn the MBP on and place it in a box, then close the box. Watch your cat. Your MBP is now in a half-restarted state. Wait. Later, when you open the box and the MBP pro has restarted and the cat is dead, it wasn't the cat. If the MBP hasn't restarted and the cat is alive then, um, Shrodinger was wrong? I dunno, I never got the hang of quantum physics. Nevermind.

Try reseting the power management chip. Shutdown the MBP, unplug the laptop from AC and remove the battery. Press the power button for 5 seconds to reset the SMC. Plug everything back together and start it up. HTH,

Dave...

Don't pay the ransom

I escaped.
Those cute little furballs lured me into the box with them. It's a good thing I'm vegan or there'd be one or two less felines to mess with MBPs in boxes.

I like Dave's suggestion. It's two difficult without IR eyesight (like they have) to try and watch them inside the closed box anyway.

PROBLEM SOLVED!!

Turns out it was just logging me out after 20 minutes of no activity. Turned off that setting and we are good to go.
