iMac G3 LED

Heya,

Well I have an iMac G3 (used daily) but the power LED in it is faulty somehow and so only works some of the time. What would be involved in an LED replacement and what sort of LED would I have to use to replace the existing Bi-Colour LED? This is a Summer 2000 Slot loading if you need to know.

Swinsor,

As you can see by the extra thread, I tried to place a picture up here showing the Wiring Harness that contains the LED, but it didn't take. Sad

If you message me with your e-mail address, I will send the picture to you.

It looks as though you may have to replace the entire harness.

Swinsor,

What have you decided to do about your LED?

Well, I am thinking perhaps leave it as it is for the moment. I know that the tubes in these iMacs aren't great and so I'm thinking that if (Read: when) the CRT dies I will perform an ATX conversion on the computer and replace the LED then. What are your thoughts on the matter Steven (or anyone else for that matter)?

Swinsor,

LOL Sounds like a good plan to me.
If it is still functioning well without the LED, don't fix it.

Sounds good. It appears that the speakers are now dyeing too! with the rate that these components are dyeing it seems like it might almost be time to close this thread and open another one to get peoples opinions on the upcoming ATX conversion. And of course you are more then welcome to share your opinion Steven!

Re: iMac G3 LED

Well, I have a bit of an exciting update (for me anyway)! I have done a bit of exploration and have figured out exactly how to replace the LED and it turns out that you DO NOT have to replace the entire wiring harness but just solder a new LED into the circuit board. If anyone is interested I will post a tutorial on how to do it when I replace the LED on my second iMac (I have already done one!) :mac:
